Anyone old enough to remember this popular private detective show, which only ran for two series from September 1979. Trevor Eve played private detective-turned radio presenter, Eddie Shoestring, a former computer programmer who returns to working life after suffering a nervous breakdown. Always on edge, he uses his phone-in show on Radio West to investigate missing persons and old, unsolved murder cases. Michael Medwin plays the owner of the radio station, often falling out with Eddie over cases which conflict with commercial interest. Lots of well-known actors appeared in the series such as Michael Elphick and Harry H Corbett, but the series didn't last long as Eve left to pursue acting roles in the theatre. The same crew then went on to produce Bergerac.A DVD release of the first series came out in 2011, although the picture quality of some of the episodes was not great. Anybody like this series?

I used to enjoy Shoestring. Though not a fan of Eve, I did like his role as Eddie. I remember the Elphick episode well. Wasn't that the one where Elphick brought his son a Scalextric type toy that blew up injuring the child ?
His boss Don Stachley was played by Michael Medwin. I met him once when I was having a walk with my family in Bristol. A lovely bloke and was pleased to have been recognised in his later years.

Yes, you're right there, Gene. It was the episode Called 'The Dangerous Game'. Michael Medwin is still going strong: 92 this year

I recall enjoying Shoestring many years ago but can't remember too much about it now as it was a long time ago! I am also surprised to hear that it only ran for 2 series

I was never a fan of Trevor Eve until more recent years. For some reason I never enjoyed Shoestring and I don't really remember why.
I didn't appreciate him as an actor until I saw him in 'Framed'. Subsequently I've been happy to watch him in more gritty dramas like 'Waking The Dead' and 'Kidnap and Ransom'
Perhaps I ought to give Shoestring another try....

I thought it was good at the time.
And I have enjoyed the re-runs.

That's the only episode I remember and only because it had a Scalextric in it which I coveted at the time.

That was the last episode broadcast too, Christmas 1980. Doesn't it make you feel old when you can remember tv programmes broadcast nearly 4 decades ago
