Ive just rewatched this on you tube, again its something I hadnt seen since I saw it at the cinema some time towards the end of 79. Ray Winstone is in it and, TBH, its not great as a film but its worth watching for the great late 70s new wave soundtrack, with a bit of disco thrown in.
Its about four young kids, two lads and two girls, who go to Torquay for the summer and get together. One of them is Ray, the other three i hadnt heard of before or since. A couple of faces in it, John Junkin and David Daker, from Boon. One of the lads has an old Anglia and i think part of the appeal for me, is that I was the same age then as the charachters in the film were (19) The lad with the Anglia gets together with the blonde one of the two girls and it brought back memories as she reminded me a bit of this girl I went out with in that summmer, and parking up in my Austin A40, in a quiet place!
Theres not much story, the quartet keep getting hassled by three Scottish yobs and Ray gets framed for a break in, but manages to prove his innocence and win a swimming contest.
Good dose of nostalgia for me, and great soundtrack, the pubs and discos were very reminiscent of how they were in 79.

Sounds good Carty, thanks for posting.
I can't say I've seen it or even recall it but your description alone means I'll be looking this up tonight when I get home. '79 was such a good year (as was '75 to '78).
Parking up in an Anglia? That was very reminiscent for me taking me back to '81.
Surging hormones eh? Where would we have been without them?
Sam.

The hormones bring back some great memories 😂 I thought the girlie's looked at their very best as well at the end of the 70s, natural looking, not excessively made up, nice hairstyles, girl next door, but with a hint of glamour, best of all, no bloody tattoos!
Reminds me of walking together at night, with the lights on and the gentle breeze, think George and WPC Julie Kingdom in Drag Act! Driving at night, windows down, some great new wave on the A40s radio, dancing on the lit up floor at Blightys in Farnworth..... Mmmm... I wanna go back to 79......

I watched 'That Summer!' on yt a while ago, quite good if you want to see what Torquay looked like in 1979 Looking at the imdb credits I notice it was produced by the people behind 'Scum' ( the film of which was released the same year ) & one of the reviews even claims that it's a 'follow up' to it, the further adventures of Winstone's character from Scum. John Judd, Carlin's nemesis in Scum, here plays his mentor swimming coach.
Unusually the director of That Summer was an American, he moved to the UK to go to film school, he also directed a couple of Children's Film Foundation films, 'The Glitterball' & 'The Battle Of Billy's Pond'.
Ray Winstone mainly appeared in small tv roles through the 80's & 90's, a few gritty British films with Ken Loach, Gary Oldman & Tim Roth in the 90's, but not until 2000 with 'Sexy Beast' did he really come to wider notice. He was appearing in Bran Flakes tv ads in the 80's.

Which in my opinion, is about his mark. Gene.

This does sound interesting Carty thanks for the heads up and will have a look for it on YT mate.
Ray Winstone can be a paradoxical character. Can be good - sometimes very good, in things like obviously Scum, Sexy Beast, Face, Vincent etc. but when he goes over the top most particularly like he did in the 2012 Sweeney film...
Sadly I think it's that manically caricatured portrait of Regan in that film which has clouded many opinions of him I'm afraid.

Nice spot Cartman 👍 this kind of thing is right up my street, and I’ll give it a watch later. I wonder if it’ll have that pre Thatcher lost world quality about it? I’ll dig out Radio On for a watch, also from 1979, also very much in the cult bracket, and was it the only British road movie ever?

Yes Bojan, it does and its in the summer at the seaside so it has a kind of good time, enjoyable vibe about it too, together with being a window into that great lost world which was rubbed out in the 80s.

This was a great little memory jogger Cartman - thanks My problem is that I don't know when to switch off though. I was just watching it on youtube and while they're all down in Devon, and Winstone goes to enter for the "Devon Long Distance Championship Swim", he is actually going into Colet Court in Hammersmith. No expense spared though - they've even daubed the racket of seagulls into the scene! Gene
