No wonder the taxi driver Fred Housego won Mastermind, isn't any kind of knowledge of a subject basically a test of memory? These professional quizzers on shows like The Chase & Eggheads are basically 'doing the knowledge' each day when they memorise facts.

These professional quizzers on shows like The Chase & Eggheads are basically 'doing the knowledge' each day when they memorise facts. That's true. They made a big deal about Fred Housego winning Mastermind (wasn't he the first winner?). The press sneered at him being a Cab Driver.
They didn't mention that Cab Drivers are intelligent people - part of the Knowledge is learning how to deal with literally anyone.
This is illustrated in the "Knowledge" with the Mr Burgess character (Nigel Hawthorne) - and always has me in fits laughing at the black humour of it all. At first you are led to believe he's just a complete arse; while in actual fact, later on, you discover he is just testing wannabe drivers on how they react to different types of peoples behavior, while at the same time they have to concentrate on directions across London.

He was on Blankety Blank 4 times according to imdb & even had a This Is Your Life done on him. I know Ted Moult was on Bullseye, a similar 'ordinary bloke' celeb. Looking back these people, Fred Dibnah included, are what would now be known as reality tv stars. So they're to blame for Jade Goody & Gemma Collins

They do still have to sit the Knowledge, it typically takes 3 to 4 years to complete. The Saint Grief, it'd take me 30-40years...
With all this Sweeney location bashing, I think Gene would finish the Knowledge in 10 minutes! How the hell do you basically learn the A to Z of London in any time frame! Even if I did I forget it fairly promptly. Gene probably is some geezer in a black cab!

We had one at a Meet a few years back who rubbished the route I'd printed out for everyone. He knew a far better and quicker way from Clerkenwell to Hammersmith himself..... Upshot was, the rest of us who followed my instructions arrived at the destination 20 minutes before he did. Sam will remember as he was in my motor with me.
