Only with toast, not with fish & chips Gene Genie. Bang on again! Beans on toast. A must have on the first meet. You've a lot to learn young Essex-me-lad! Lunchtime the day before the meet has to be Bubble And Squeak made with Brussels sprouts. It has far better impact next day than beans on toast! The night before the meet is fish and chips with mushy peas, and the morning of the meet is a Wetherspoons Traditional English breakfast - THAT's where you can have your beans! Sam.

Why are fish & chips so expensive? It's just potatoes and fried fish? Why do you always seem to have to wait for the chips too? Why do southern chippy's never do beans? Why must everything be such a faff these days? I have always wondered why this is. I suppose it's down to ever decreasing fish stocks? Back in 1986 it cost just £1.10 for cod and chips at my local chippy, now it seems closer to a tenner Vi

Something I've wondered about chippys & take aways is why they give such big portions. Almost always they give you enough chips for 2 people. And why is it that you can't make chips at home that look & taste like chip shop chips?

The leftovers lend themselves to being frozen then oven heated Not so sure about that but our local chippy used to keep the remainder of the chips from the previous night and run them through the deep fat fryer again for the mid-day meals. They were the best chips I've ever had, perfectly crisp and not a all stodgy like the soft under-done chips. As for the size of the portions of chips we've always ordered two pieces of fish to each portion of chips and shared, even then we're likely to have some left over. Sam.

Most of the old style ones did that. The oven method is a close second as the oil on them heats up and crisps them up again.

One portion would do four or five people easy. The best chips are sold in Whitby in my experience. Charles.

Three things have bugged me in this past week regarding the behaviour of some people that I really don't get:
1) Returning home on Friday at 11:30pm I was driving down an unlit road with a 40mph limit and there was a car approaching from the opposite direction with dipped headlights blazing so visibility was not the best. At the very last moment I slammed on the brakes because I just about spotted a small red reflector just in front of our car. Yes there was a cyclist, dressed in black clothing, no lights on the bike and just the very small reflector on his backpack. The bell-end had no idea how close he was to being a statistic. To top it all as I passed him with my hooter blaring I spotted he had headphones on as well! What I don't get is why anyone would put themselves in that position, utter madness!
2) Another cyclist today. I understand that recent laws have changed to protect the cyclist but why do some feel that they need to exercise their right to cycle six feet away from the kerb holding up traffic when a cycle lane has already been provided for them? I know it isn't compulsory to have to use the cycle lane but they're doing themselves no favours by holding up traffic unnecessarily. There's enough animosity between varying road users so I don't get why they exacerbate it by not utilising the lane that has been provided for them for their protection. Had the cyclist used 'their' lane then there would have been ample space for others to safely pass. I'm sure they'd be up in arms if a car was parked in the lane.
3) A couple of pedestrians this time. Annie and I live on a road where houses are built on one side of the road only, the opposite side being tree-lined. Consequently there is a footpath on one side of the road only. What I don't get is why there have been a number of relatively mature individual pedestrians walking in the road on the opposite side to the footpath with their back to any approaching vehicles. Once again they tend to have headphones or earphones and are insulated against the sound of approaching vehicles.
Sam.
