Good thinking/decision Sam! No disrespect to fans of these shows but just don't like their identikit sugar coated style/view of the past when rammed down our throats a bit tiresome. They're bloody tedious to make too.
This is my "quick how to" guide to making such a costume drama - you will need:
A Big Stately home (Listed) where every US Tourist will visit and turn into a shrine. A toffy nosed writer who sniffs at the "working class" reprebate crew.
A Couple of toffy nosed actors & actresses in Top Hats, and Dresses A Load of extras in Top Hats and big sideburns
A horse & carriage (crucial)
A Scene lit with candles, but masses of light flooding through the window. An exterior scene with a man in a top hat running across the front lawn shouting "Take that you bounder...." A Pretty girl in a big dress looking sultry over her left shoulder Some tinkly piano music A grumpy old Victorian Man or Woman who sits in a large room moaning A couple of bawdy servents
There you go.....
An exterior scene
ROFL you had me in stitches there Sparky.
Joking aside take it you've worked on a few of these, must've been right pain's to do.

Yes a couple. Though not "Downton".
I worked on "Lost in Austen" (a kind of costume version of Life on Mars but more tedious), "Mr Turner" (the film) and various "Victoria" episodes. That latter two are really handy as they were/are shot about 2 miles from home.

You seem to know a fair bit about these programs Dirty, something you'd like to share? Annie and our daughters watched Downton for years. It got to a point one Christmas Day that while they were glued to that, our son and I went to the pub as soon as it started. The program only lasted two hours but we stayed at the pub for four. Good job it was within walking distance! Sam. And so everyone was happy.

Chewing gum
Card games, especially competitive poker
The Simpsons and other US animated comedy or any US sitcom
Stand up comedy, particularly American stand up. Most of it sounds more like sweary ranting than humour to me
Getting worked up over sport, particularly football
Men wearing jewelry
Keeping caged birds and other animals in confined spaces. Showing animals for prizes
Opera and musicals
Theme parks, rollercoasters and thrill rides
Displaying plates, glassware, books and other things designed to be used in cabinets
Mounting tv sets on the wall in the middle of the room
Karaoke
Pub quizzes
Reading in the toilet. When are you ever in there long enough to start reading?
Nightclubs, pubs, restaurants, family do's & socialising in general
Magazines that come with newspapers ( Sunday Supplements, etc. ) Full of nonsense that no one would choose to read
Despite liking animals & nature, I find natural history programmes strangely aggravating. Also anything with Brian Cox and Dara O'Brian and other 'isn't science interesting' personalities, it should be interesting that we live on a planet in a solar system that is a tiny speck in a limitless universe, but somehow I find it excrutiatingly dull to hear about it

Agree Arthur on a few there. Card games in particular, I just can't be arsed with them, I find them too complicated and sort of maths related. US animated comedies, I liked The Simpsons and South Park (where my user name comes from BTW! ) at first but they were both dragged on massively too long. Nature programmes, definitely. I find the subject interesting but programmes about it are always, somehow boring, strangely.

Arthur - totally agree with:
Karaoke Chewing Gum Sunday Supplements
Social Gatherings - such as "Family Get togethers".... I don't get those who have family that all live within a few miles of each other, and don't really get on. So they organise a get together, spend most of the day talking to each other through gritted teeth, get p***ed and fall out over who's going to get Grannies Inheritance.

Quite a selection there Tiger, and I thought I could be a bit of a grump!
I definitely agree with these though:
Especially the birds and animals, poor buggers must feel like Norman Stanley Fletcher but without the humour.
And as for showing animals for prizes? Stuff that, let them develop their own character to fit in with the rest of the family.
There's a few more that I'd add to that list:
Gambling apps on a mobile such as 888 Casino etc Futile games on a mobile such as Candy Crush etc Friday night after work drinks - I have had to work with those arses all week, I certainly don't wish to socialize with them Bringing cakes into the office on your birthday - if I don't want to drink with them I don't want to treat them to cake either Brown-nosing to the boss - I can't and won't be a 'yes' man especially when I can see things are going to turn to rat sh!t
Sam.

Sam. Pretty much my sentiments, and just about everyone else I have worked with!
Ever considered a job in the Film Industry, Sam?
