Used to be a good way of working out someone's age!
Anyway, mine was Philadelphia Freedom - Elton John & the Elton John Band, 1975.

Oh, I thought it might have been a single by Ultravox. Mind you that means nothing to me...... Ahh Vienna......... Stan you're right it is a marker for someone's age. I didn't need to buy many singles as a youngster as we used to get batches of ex-jukebox stock alongside other singles given to me by older cousins, which was a tasty result. The first one I went and bought for myself i seem to remember was Kajagoogoo - Too Shy bought from WH Smiths Woolwich branch no less

I was actually quite late buying my first single, and I never got into vinyl either. My first 2 singles bought (at the same time I think) were 'Kinky Afro' by The Happy Mondays and I also bought 'Crazy' by Seal.
I think they were bought on the same trip into Nottingham. I would have been 15 years old, which is late to be buying my first bit of vinyl. But do bear in mind that cassette singles were available then, too.
I remember buying 'There's no other way' by Blur. Whether that was released before the other ones I purchased I can't remember. Thinking about it, I reckon the Blur single may have preceded them.

"Rappers Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang It was the first 12 inch single I bought, when everybody thought raping would be a gimmicky short lived fad. The record was the first rap single to break into the charts, and samples Chic's "Good Times". The band, and the record label are named after the district in Harlem. I remember trying to buy it and finding none of the record shops selling it. I walked into one shop and asked for it, to be told, "No, but why don't you buy Kurtis Blow, "Christmas Rappin" as it sounds exactly the same ?".
