This is available as a 6 part black and white serial, you can watch it free on line.
The beeb made three Quatermasses, all with different actors in the lead role. Bit like Felix Leiter in the Bond films.
The third and best is this one made in 59 but just qualifies as it was shown into early 1960. The first one is now incomplete and the second gets a bit monotonous.
This has a great plot based a very clever idea about ancient Martians and superb use of simple special effects.
Its like a very superior early Dr Who including a shouty army type and duff but believable government types.
OK, if you don't like SF you'll be bored rigid but if not give it a go.

Brilliant serial by one of tv's greatest writers Nigel Kneale. I only recently discovered that an HD version was released late last year-
I prefer the tv version to the good but rather overrated film, black & white is so much more effective in this case than colour. The other two films are classics too. People who aren't into sci-fi shouldn't be put off, these films are about ideas rather than martians, the themes in 'Quatermass 2'- government secrecy, meddling with food, etc. are still relevant today.

Yes the TV version explains it all a bit more, the colour adds nothing and its more haunting on TV.

Didn't like the ITV Quatermass made in 79.
All a bit too new age for me.
Morecombe and Wise were no good when they went to ITV either, initially at least!

Yes, the BBC serial gripped the nation at the time back in 1953. I think Nigel Kneale later objected to Brian Donlevy being cast as Quatermass in the first two Hammer films, seeing him as totally unsuitable for the part. I must watch this in the near future. Vi

How you enjoy it, talking moggy. Can I be your agent? We'd make a fortune touring the country with a talking moggy show. Well, I'd make a fortune, you mostly eat tinned fish............................

Actually Ive just noticed that the naff one made in 79 with John Mills was produced by Euston films.
Don't remember many punch-ups or car chases.

I quite liked the John Mills version in ‘79, though you could say it’s dated a little bit. I believe Nigel Neale was influenced by the state of late 70s Britain when writing this series, so you get the sense of an out of control society, a country in decline and the authorities gripped by inertia.

Yes, I think you're right about the influence. You should write about these things when they happen as how often do you get an out of control society, a country in decline and the authorities gripped by inertia. Wait a minute .........................

I watched The Quatermass Xperiment again last night, Brian Donlevy makes John Wayne look animated, he's totally unsuited to the role of a man of science with his hardbitten cop persona. The scenes in Chessington Zoo at night are as eerie as anything I've ever seen, the black & white photography is superb. Then there's Richard Wordsworth's amazing performance, imagine an actor today being asked to play a mute character who gradually turns into a monster, where would they start?
