Interesting post Sparky and it seems political meddling was behind a lot of all this. As you surmise it seems pure hypocrisy regarding the print media involvement in tv companies compared to Murdoch's entry into the market by the end of the decade. After the dust settled on all the mergers and power struggles on a national level were we left with a better system ? I don't think so. We're all paying more for less in my view. Mr Murdoch's selling of Sky to an American firm and the fact that Netflix and Amazon have been successful gives an insight into what's likely to come. How long before the traditional big boys of British tv, ITV and the BBC have to change or even sell out to a global concern? It's on the cards. I agree, I can see ITV at least selling out sometime in the next 10 years - more than likely owned by some US broadcaster. CBS or something.
I am sure I read that Mr Murdoch even tried to buy in to ITV - the monopolies commission stepped in quick and put a stop.
With the BBC, everything seems to centre around the Licence Fee issue - if that was got rid of, they would have to include Sponsorship/Advertising or be funded by outsiders. Besides, with the Licence Fee in place, the Government has some control over it's output too. That's another conversation!
The US TV Network totally confuses me - I gather there is NBC, ABC, CBS and PBS - as well 100s of affiliated stations. On top of this, there are other companies owned by Universal, Fox, Paramount, Warner.
Back here...
Channel 4 are now a seperate entity - they were totally funded by a subscription from each of the ITV Companies. C4 programmes were broadcast from Channel 4s Network centre in London. Advertising was run regionally - as on ITV.
Who owns Channel 5 these days? I thought Thames had something to do with them?

Here's how Studio 7 at Central TV in Nottingham looks today... (not my photo)
S7 was home to Family Fortunes, Price is Right, Bullseye, Celebrity Squares (1993 version), Supermarket Sweep (briefly). Not Sure if "Auf Pet" S2 was made in this Studio- but I would think that was done in 6 - which was a little smaller and had no audience seating.

I can just picture Leslie Crowther leading the public to their jabs, 'Come on down!'
Then Tony Green standing to one side of the nurse with reassuring words as you get your jab, 'Ease yourself in, you've all the time in the World'.

Just as well they didn't have the huge Bull from Bullseye there - everyone would think Boris had rolled up.
Though, could just picture a que of 3 Geordie brickies, a Westcountry Brickie, A Cockney carpenter, a Brummie Electrician and a Scouse Plasterer stood outside the studios awaiting their Jab...

Darts, injections with syringes, that works! You should pitch that idea to ITV - insert the word Celebrity somewhere in there too - you'd be on to a winner.
