Hmmmm interesting. Reading the fallout from the Aussie grand prix it was said that Ferrari would be a different beast off of street circuits. Lets see if this weekend continues to turn up these fast practise times.

Apologies it's a bit late but finally caught up with the Bahrain highlights over the last few days.
Big shame that Charles Leclerc’s maiden win didn’t come from this race. Despite the technical setback he’s got plenty to be proud of with a convincing pole position, out racing Vettel on track and driving a very controlled race up to the point the gremlins kicked in for him. Maybe not intended but he’s going to raise plenty of headaches and issues for Ferrari and particularly Vettel if he keeps this top form up over the season as he’s certainly not a also ran team-mate that Schumacher had nor is he as ‘whatever’ as Kimi.
Plenty of food for thought for Vettel as if Leclerc is at least matching him and if (?) there’s no real advantage to either driver in the WDC Ferrari could easily adopt equal driver status given Leclerc’s future potential. Another odd error from Vettel too when fending off Hamilton which again raises the questions about his ability to go wheel to wheel/handle pressure when it comes his way. He also seemed second best to Leclerc in qualifying and the race and with the likes of Mick Schumacher and others knocking on Ferrari’s door Vettel has to start delivering this season IMHO after arguably two seasons he could, could have been world champion. It’s only two races in but Ferrari generally have lost a bit of ground to Mercedes – they can’t afford to lose any more ground to them.
Yes Hamilton/Mercedes were lucky in the race but again shows Lewis’s race-smarts over the years to look at the long game when things looked a bit lost in quali and it’s perhaps something Vettel should adopt. Mercedes generally may not have the faster package but it (at the moment) looks more reliable and if the Ferrari is a bit shaky this season they could gift them a WDC/WCC. Still generally Mercedes and Hamilton deserve all the success they’re having in the Hybrid era and it’s up to the other teams to raise their game and challenge them. A Hamilton v Leclerc title battle would be interesting, perhaps a season too soon for that maybe but if it’s on!
Mixed results for Red Bull with a half-decent 4th for Verstappen but Gasly seems a bit out of sorts there with his no points finish in Aus and 8th here. Disaster for Renault, shame really as both Ricciardo and Hulkenberg could deliver much better results and be contenders in decent equipment. A bit upstaged by their customers McLaren who managed a decent quali and race from newcomer Lando Norris with a creditable 6th. The fact he seemed disappointed with that result is good as he shows he wants more and certainly upstaged his more experienced team mate Sainz too. Decent points again for Raikkonen in 7th and nice to see rookie Alexander Albon in 9th too also upstaging his more experienced team mate Kyvat too.
With one exception the rest much as expected. The exception was Haas who are normally Top 10 material but both in quali and the race seemed off sorts here and perhaps some of the woes with their supplier team Ferrari are filtering down to them and Alfa Romeo (Sauber) too.
Not a bad race overall, might have been better if Leclerc got the fairytale win but I don’t begrudge Hamilton winning either and it’s still all early days and wide open for this at the moment.
China and the 1000th GP coming up. Bring it on!
