I definitely think the majority of kids would maybe be desensitised to it! I remember as a kid watching a film called silent running with Bruce Dern, where this cute little Robot gets marooned on this floating space ship, all alone with a soul purpose of just tending to the plants. At the I was absolutely distraught inconsolable.. A few years ago I noticed it was on the tv again, at the time my kids were quite young, I got them to watch it thinking they would enjoy it and to see how they would react with the ending. To my surprise they didn't even seem flustered at all lol!

I definitely think the majority of kids would maybe be desensitised to it! We were shown The War Game at school, the 1960s nuclear war film banned for a while by the BBC. I have to admit it didn't have much impact on us. Fast forward a few years and the BBC's Threads with a similar theme certainly did have an impact. On the subject of PIF's, Nick Brimble is an actor many will remember from The Sweeney, The Bill and countless roles on TV over the years, and still working regularly. However, whenever the wife spots Nick in something and asks "He's familiar, what else has he been in ?", the first thing that always comes to mind is, "Err, he was the bloke in that PIF who got a shock off that drill"...

The only public information films I remember we're the funny ones, like Reginald Molehusband, a cartoon one about litter "I hit that bottle Petunia" one about fire doors and I also vaguely remember one where a fork lift driver was too busy perving at an attractive girl in the office to watch where he was going and crashed into a milk float.
Another one was think bike, with a Sweeney face, Eddie Monks from Money Money Money, and another cartoon one about the Weaver bird, referring to drivers weaving in and out of traffic lanes.

Yes, I must try attending sometime in the future as they look like a lot of fun. As you say, I'm in the back of beyond and getting a passport to use outside of Yorkshire is difficult but not impossible. I sneaked into London as an 18 year old back in '81 but gave myself away when I asked for a packet of crisps to go with my pint and was told "we don't do food in pubs down here, Son". The positive side though was I developed a taste for Fuller's ESB. Just realised that the last time I was anywhere near central London was 1986. I guess there have been a few changes since !

Images below are from some pifs I remember.
'Purse Snatcher' from 1971, from the looks on their faces all the women are in awe of this thief & 'Guard Your Purse' from 1973 which ends with Joss Ackland advising women to 'look after your purse before someone else does'-
'Keep Out' 1972-
'Broken Glass' 1973-
'Youngsters Learn To Swim' 1973-
'Children And Strangers' 1976-
'Where's Your Lad?' 1980-
'Fireworks- Where's Your Lad Tonight?' 1976 featuring Ray Winstone & Jean Boht-
'Dangerous Diamonds' 1979-
'Rabies Means Death' undated. Clive Swift narrates this distrubing pif intercut with images ( not seen on the tv version I remember ) of an apparently rabid African child in obvious distress on a hospital bed- 'death that is in a manner beyond description'.
'Fireworks- Throwing', undated. A short pif that was shown around Guy Fawkes Night & ends with a boy throwing a firework at his girlfriend & a girl crying 'it's Julie!'
One pif that I remember seeing often but isn't included on 'Charley Says' is one that starts with two hard looking blokes in a car outside an old lady's house & the narrator telling us 'burglars don't look like Bill Sykes these days'. 'She'll do' decides one of the blokes then they knock on her door & saying 'ello love' they push their way in, last image you see is of a frail woman closing the door slowly & asking 'would you like a cup of tea?'

These two seemed to be shown more often than most, I remember seeing them into the 90's-

Wasn't it Kenny Everett who did the 'voice' of Charlie?
The Fireworks PIFs I remember used to appear around mid-late October, played during the intervals between schools programmes on ITV. There was another about the Firework Code, which was from around 1980; this PIF Arthur posted is a little older than that.
They were never "officially" broadcast; but I remember seeing the 'Protect and Survive' series of films years back - and they totally sh*t me up! In the case of these films; they were stored (at Central at least) in a locked safe within the Presentation/Transmission department.
When ordered by the Government - these films would be retrieved from the safe and screened directly from Telecine. The call for this would come via the "Red Phone" - the ITV network internal conference call system.
The BBC also had a similar arrangement (they had an underground transmission suite and a backup one) - the Radio stations had pre-recorded disks with messages on.
