I thought we could have a thread for posting your favourite public information adverts. I'll start off with one from the 1970s.

I think that there was also an animated one about the coastguard? I vaguely remember a bloke and his Missus on the beach and someone was drowning and he says to his wife "Oh Look, someone's waving" and waves at the person. Steed

Good thread Vienna. I'm a fan of these, I had a video with a lot of them on and remember Tufty, Joe & Petunia et al. Some really useful information in the main but how many people were injuring themselves on carpets over polished floors to warrant having one made? Times have changed too, today the Govt would probably be criticised for promoting the nanny state and wasting money on making them.

If you haven't already got it then the pif compilation dvd 'Charley Says' featuring over 280 pifs can be bought for a measly £3.60 in the Network sale. The BFI have a number of dvds devoted to pifs, I've got 'Worth The Risk?' & 'Stop Look Listen'. The films have been remastered in HD so they look really good, each set has a nice booklet as well. The pif I seem to remember seeing most is the one featuring Captain Peacock & Mr.Mash from 'Are You Being Served'. You'd think in this age of health & safety that pifs would still be being made & shown regularly, but no, apparently the powers that be no longer care if you slip on a rug or abandon fridges without removing the door first. What puzzled me about pifs was that they were generally shown at closedown, why weren't they shown primetime if the object was to inform people? This is the pif that has the strongest memory for me. The director has a blog where he describes the making of it- besonian.wordpress.com/2011/05/20/dark-and-lonely-water/

That's a very eerie one Arthur, cheers for posting. I don't remember that one at all but do remember the Fridge one you mentioned. They used to scare me a lot as a youngster these films but i suppose that was the point. It certainly made me wary of playing with matches, returning to fireworks etc.
One of the later ones that sticks in the brain is the Gas leak one where the guy shouts NO! ,
as someone goes to turn on a light.
