On the sad passing of Tina Turner I went on to Youtube to listen to "Steamy Windows" and was met by this dreary cover:
Tony Joe White - Steamy Windows
Given the dreary voice and comparing with the topic of the lyrics I'd suggest that the only way he'd be generating steam would be through going solo!
Now the proper version:
Tina Turner - Steamy Windows
R.I.P. Tina

On the sad passing of Tina Turner I went on to Youtube to listen to "Steamy Windows" and was met by this dreary cover: I always thought I was quite up on my 70s/80s music trivia, but the news reports of Tina's passing taught me two new things:- 1) I had no idea that Mark Knopfler wrote Private Dancer, even though on reflection it has his style all over it. 2) The original What's Love Got To Do With It? was first recorded by Bucks Fizz. It's not the worst cover, but it pales into insignificance next to Tina's version.

We've got a company replacing the soffits, fascias and gutters on the house and the two lads doing the job have a radio playing. God knows what station is playing but so far I've heard 'dance' covers of Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston and the Bee Gees.
Now I'm not a huge fan of Whitney but will happily listen to a couple of tracks before moving on so here's the original of what I heard just now:
Whitney Houston - How Will I Know
Now the dance version that I've just had to sit through:
Whitney Houston, Clean Bandit - How Will I Know
Now if that wasn't bad enough, during my search on Youtube for the dance cover remix version or whatever it is called, this abomination cropped up:
Sam Smith - How Will I Know
Be warned, it is painful to listen to and I only managed to get to around 30 seconds in before I shut it off. It may be me but I fail to see any talent that he/him/their/they/(whatever this week's pronouns are) may possess.
Sam.

If they were going to cover a Whitney song, they should at least have had the dignity not to use Autotune. I'm not a Whitney fan, but she didn't have to use the vocal electronic equivalent of Viagra to hit the notes. The Sam Smith one was particularly dire.

I was just sat chilling out with a glass of single malt in front of the 80's music channel and chatting to Annie when this abomination came on:
Michael Damian - Rock On
However when searching for it on YouTube I also spotted this cover:
Def Leppard - Rock On
My first thought was who the hell is Michael Damian but next thought was that although I like Def Leppard why did they feel the need to cover this?
Now I realise that David Essex may not be everyone's cup of tea, he's certainly not in the top ten favourite artists of mine, but I can listen to a few of his tracks here and there as they bring back memories of the early 70s and some particular aspects of my childhood. However I do feel that the cover versions have put too much into their arrangements unnecessarily and lost the simplicity of the original:
David Essex - Rock On
Maybe it is because I just remember David Essex's version from 1973 and have grown up with it but I just don't think the covers add anything, or maybe they add too much?
Sam.

They've tried to add something and in reality have added nothing to improve or equal the original. I too like Def Leppard, but this just sounds like a Friday afternoon job to fill up an album. Let's knock off a quick cover, add a cliché guitar riff half way through and we can be in the pub by 4 O'clock. I liked their cover of The Sweet's Action. My only beef with it is that on all the guitar tab/chord websites, the tabs are listed as "Action by Def Leppard". Millions of teenage guitar novices will be oblivious to the fact that it's not an original.

A weak cover of the brilliant Walk on By by Dionne Warwick, done by Gabrielle was on yesterday. I like Gabrielle, she did two great songs, Rise and When a Woman, and this cover wasn't terrible, but just nowhere near as good as the superb 60s original

Agreed her version isn't terrible as it follows the original quite well but it is her vocals that are lacking. Sam.
