I've just been on to Youtube and searched for Procol Harem's Whiter Shade Of Pale and this abomination appeared:
I've never been a fan of Annie Lennox anyway but this does her no favours. Perhaps it doesn't help that her barnet in this video makes her look like Grayson Perry.
Whiter Shade Of Pale is one of those very unique tracks that are virtually impossible to do justice to. I like the quirky 60s sound of the original but even with that I need to be in the mood for it as it does linger along somewhat. I find i rarely play it right through.
Recorded for Annie's 1995 album Medusa I thought I would give it a chance as I'm a fan of Annie's singing talent. I can only assume that they tried to tastefully modernise it for the 90's but it misses the mark. Maybe an arrangement closer to the original with a vocal that tests a talented singer would of been a better direction? Unfortunately the new more subdued arrangement doesn't improve it at all so it's hard to see what was really achieved here when it clearly is a secondary version.
Overall disappointing and suspect it was just a filler track for the album.
