Is he humouring Sam "I am the negotiator" Tyler? Is it the fact that it was written very quickly and they had an hour to fill? Is he still rather fragile from Ray's birthday? It is a fair point, though, Del. I notice he didn't dash in, guns blazing upon realisation that Jackie Queen was in there. Such a shame. No, definitely not, that would remove all realism. I hate it when they do that in any series, though, to be fair. I'm actually more worried about it than excited at the moment! As much as I've always wished there were more of it, at least it was safe. It should work; same writers, same cast, but equally I don't want anything to tarnish it! Good points raised and it could quite easily be a mixture of those factors. They can't always get everything they want to do on the script off the page onto the screen in the alloted run time and a quick rewrite won't help. Its a good episode though this and from what they said It leaves you wondering if its written in this way as a facet of Genes character or whether deeper relations with J.Q colour the picture leading up to this siege. To me this episode has similarities to The Sweeney episode Thou Shall Not Kill. Gene and Jack decide not to act and seem to regret it as the picture changes and other influences cloud the picture. I find this one grows on me the more I watch it. I'm going to have to watch that now, aren't I? As I said before, I didn't used to like this episode. I remember mum and I secretly omitting it from our one a night play through without dad noticing! But I actually enjoy the scenes between Gene/Sam/Annie (any combination thereof). Lots of good lines that stick with me, too! I even quite like that we arrive with Sam at the office, discovering the remaining debris of Ray's birthday party - it gives us a feeling that there are things going on that we don't see which is always good.

It's that time again! Series 1 Episode 7, tonight which sees detainee Billy Kemble die in police custody whilst Sam and Gene are enjoying a curry. But how did it happen? We were joined a little more by Dean Andrews (DS/C/I Ray Carling) this week as it was a heavily Ray based episode, though thankfully also a lot of nice shots of the Guv, what can I say?. Ray is quite a nasty piece of work in Life on Mars; much more palatable in Ashes to Ashes. Reassuring to know that Chris Chibnall really cannot come up with his own storylines at the best of times. Had I ever mentioned he single-handedly ruined over half a decade of Doctor Who in a matter of screen hours? (and judging by some of Dean Andrews' tweets, he agrees; good man!)
Confessions of a script writer This image nearly killed me. I will rein in the fangirl monologue because I fear you all think I'm a useless bimbo already or at least doing a good impression of one ... Seemingly Dean enjoyed roughing John Simm up in the locker room, and to my surprise, the lockers were indeed real, boys and girls. Bet the risk assessment was lengthy. I never knew Dean and Liz were from the same town, but there you go. I had no idea Pulp were ever considered cool. But that is one of the goosebump-inducing scenes on Life On Mars, for me. When the modern world seeps through for a second. Should any of you wish to Life on Mars your bathrooms (it's probably très chic right about now) here's a handy hint. A life lesson for us all I don't know. I wasn't quite as on board with this watch-along. But any time spent watching LOM is time well spent, in my book. Keep 'em peeled, boys.

Thanks for the update Drakey. Another Sweeney nod in the name Kemble but that's no bad thing. Another good ep and agree Dean allows Ray's nasty 70s copper persona to flourish here in this episode.

Thanks for the update Gene. I like the fact they based Tylers gear on Bodie

Good job you were on the ball, Guv . Gutted I missed it, actually. Thank you for the highlights, I'll probably have a gander on twitter now. Blimey ... who dragged Matthew Graham out of the woodwork?

Thanks for the update Gene, some great info there. Break out from a mental institution? So is that where Sam disappeared off to and Gene was covering up? Interesting! Sam

Resisting all obvious comments about Sam being in a mental institution. Just about.
