I managed to see this over the last few days and even though I’m a (very) biased fan I’d fully recommend it to everyone.
‘Decades’ gave a insight into a project which showed New Order doing something a bit bolder, a bit out of their comfort zone and also highlighted many of the pitfalls and headaches – Steve admitted to ‘biting off more than he could chew’, to be overcome with the Manchester MiF, Vienna and Torino gigs they did with visual artist Liam Gillick and the RNCM. Personally I liked the way the band also gave a spotlight in the documentary to the RNCM students they brought on board who’s brief was a collaboration with a ‘unspecified major band’ and also nice that the band allowed them some input in responsibility in playing the parts they (and many so called 'live' bands) normally sequence at the shows.
Just seemed good that the band gave a spotlight here to their contributions and also that of relative newcomers Tom Champman and Phil Cunningham too. Nice humour from particularly Steve and Bernard too and a nice touch was a nod to Hooky from Bernard too. Even though he didn’t mention him in name Bernard did say ‘The previous bass was a bloody good one’… such a shame things went so toxic between those two.
A nice ending was a live performance of Joy Division’s Decades too and for anyone who has Sky I’d fully recommend watching this documentary as/when Sky repeat this. I’ve seen New Order a few times before but this documentary just made being at one of these Manchester gigs special for me.
