Yes I remember that one, both the original tyre advert and the send up by not the nine o clock news. Still car related, I've just remembered a couple more for Vauxhall Opel, about the time the front drive version of the cavalier came out, which would have been about 1981, and this young lad in the showroom used to just get the job of cleaning when he wanted to be a salesman. I might be wrong here, but the older guy who was the boss at the dealership I vaguely thought was Michael Medwin from Shoestring. Anyone know or remember the adverts? The only 80s Vauxhall ads I remember had Nigel Hawthorne and Tom Conti. I can't recall Medwin though he may well have been.... Gene. Those are the ones I remember too.
One of them was when they bought out the 'Expression' models and Tom Conti's character had a picture of himself on a banner on the roof of the car. In a good play on words Nigel Hawthorne had a go at Tom Conti with the phrase "Take your stupid face off of that Expression".
It is probably on Youtube but I can't access it from the office.
Sam.

Thanks for the updates on this one, and it wasnt Michael Medwin after all! Memory playing tricks as I hadnt seen the advert since 1981.
I also remember the Tom Conti/Nigel Hawthorne ones too, they were about 10 years later, about 1990 ish from memory

A haunting classic...
The music used was Mahler's Symphony No7. Movement 2.

Only just discovered this topic ! Anyone remember this classic ad and the catchy jingle at the end... ... and back in the day, did you used to sing an extra second line to the jingle that definitely wouldn't have been featured in the ad ? (NSFW - If you know it...you'll know)

Adverts, adverts, adverts were oh so visual back then and really told a story! It’s funny when ya think of an advert and then think to yourself how old it is or when it was on Tv, and surprisingly it’s always a lot older than ya think or was on tv a longer time ago then ya every realised, examples of these are, and ones that always stick in my mind are the following- The all whites secret lemonade aid drinker, where the dude used to sneak down stairs in the middle of the night and get the bottle of lemonade from the fridge, remember this one so clearly like yesterday, but hard to believe it was first shown in about 1973’ then they were the fridge freezer ones of the the early 80s, which very visually for a young person at the time stuck in ya head! Zanuusi the appliance of science, and then the freezer would take off! then they were the Yellow pages adverts, and where the kid was after a bike, and I think his dad was looking I through the window with happiness, seeing his son with his bike! guess it just represented a time where life appeared simpler, which may have been more family oriented, and where kids may have been for most, more easily pleased and content!! Were we ?! happy days ha!

The infamous Lee Cooper/ Gary Numan advert from '79 remembered this one as a kid and sure it got quickly banned on TV around the time.
