I thought this would be topical at the moment with one of the very longest periods of prolonged Hot Summer weather with temperatures above 30 Celsius since the well known 1976 Summer;
A recent report I read stated that so far 2018, hasn't yet had as many continuous days in the UK where somewhere in the country has been over 30 Celsius - that was of course '76 but we seem to be approaching it.......
Anyone remember any other particularly hot summers since '76 (maybe even earlier) that stick in your mind and what you may have been doing or where you were at the time? The 70's ones were mentioned in another members posting but what of 1980 onwards?
1983 - was quite a baking one I seem to remember; started before we broke up for school and continued into the August, although the temperatures weren't what they are now as far as I know
1989 - A quite warm dry one too for some time and I remember often getting up to get water often for drinking and the fans going at the time. I started work full time permanently that year although that office building never had air con (or double glazing in the winter). Great for experiencing open top motoring though as a passenger in a mates Triumph Herald convertible, he had at the time (same friend now has a Vitesse convertible and recently been given his dads Stag too!).
1990 - Pretty similar, coincided with the World Cup that year and watching games at the pubs on the telly as well as discovering nightclubs! Some great nights in beer gardens then too.
1995 - Bit warmer than the other early 90's Summers - long dry period and was well remembered. Took a fabulous sunny road trip in my silver Escort (bought that year) in convoy in the early July with other similar cars down to Somerset for a weekend and car show down there.
2003 - Apparently a record for the hottest temperature in Faversham Kent of 38.5 celsius - don't remember it being that hot for long though, only one Monday I had off work which got up to about 32. Car was overheating a bit by then and didn't finally get the problem licked till 2008 - I remember the London traffic in the noughties Sweeney meets not helping too!
2006 - Strangely not being mentioned anywhere but one Friday I was driving about for work and I parked the car at lunchtime, got back and the cars outside temp readout was 37.5. I finally had a car with aircon by then.
2013 - One Saturday I went up to Norfolk, for a car show weekend and the day I drove up it was the hottest day of the year, although there was a quick thunderstorm, that evening, but a very warm Sunday next day.

Yes, DC, the ones you list I remember as hot. 1983 was particularly good and I also enjoyed 1995. Oasis, Don’t look back in anger, Paul Weller you do something to me!
This year has been unusually prolonged, but it has recently become unpleasantly humid.

1995 has great memories of my Yamaha RD350YPVS and the super sticky tarmac of that summer.

Considering the persistent hot, dry and sunny weather we are experiencing this summer, it's a good idea for a thread, Gerry 1995 is the best one I can remember; it was even drier than the legendary summer of 1976, though not quite so remembered by the media as temperatures weren't quite as high. I remember going to loads of barbeques. My dad always remembers 1959 as one of the best ever summers. Warm and sunny weather apparently lasted from the second week of May until mid October. Vi

You have a good memory Gerry, I really can't remember at all what the weather was doing from year to year.
I'm on the North West coast, this hot weather has been as prolonged as I can remember but it doesn't feel as hot to me as it has been in previous years or maybe I just feel the heat less these days. I remember seeing heat hazes more often as a child, as nonsensical as that sounds, possibly it's because there was so much less traffic about then so you got a clear view of the road ahead.

Yes, my mum and dad said there were some good ones at the end of the 50s. Dad said 1940 was hot too, but being in the army at the time meant he didn't have the opportunity to enjoy it!

Remember mid 70's i lost my magnifying glass and seeing the fire brigade rushing to a field where i had been previously will never know if it was the magnifying glass i lost that started it. i can vaguely remember 1996 being a good summer when the euro's were on i was singing for England and Scotland lol

I don't know how it compared to other years but the summer of '93 was a good one for me.
I was working on the Isle Of Wight on a two-year contract around many different sites across the island. Most of the sites were small, roadside cabinets in open-air locations with a good number of those being close to beaches.
Naturally I scheduled those to be during the summer months to maximise my time out in the sun, and would often have a dip in the briny of a lunchtime. Needless to say I had the best ever suntan and the daily swim was pretty good exercise too. To this day I maintain it was the best job I've ever had as I was free to schedule the work myself, my manager was too busy with other work to worry me, and I was getting well paid for it as well.
So that was my memory of '93, the records may state otherwise but for me it was a damn good summer.
Sam.

I don’t remember the summer of 76 as I was only two at the time but do remember 1983. I spent most of the summer with my Dad, driving around in his van, he had just started his own business at the time and I thought it was great travelling around. I remember it being hot most days. It’s funny as I didn’t seem to bother about it then as much as I do now.
I also remember 1990, the year I left school. I didn’t get a job straight away, I had a “holiday” before starting work in September although I did have a Saturday job. I remember riding my 50cc motorbike around most days and keeping cool, It seemed like a long summer.
I do remember 95 as being hot and also 2006 which not many people who I speak to remember that one. Some great memories, especially 1990.

I was also two in 1976 so don't remember that one but thinking back most of the school holidays in the 80s seemed to be decent weather. I don't think there was prolonged periods of time where temperatures were over 30 degrees. The holidays were usually spent watching the BBC 1 morning kids tv then I would be outside pretty much all day. I left school in 1990 and I had a summer holiday job in a card factory which was pretty hot with all the printing presses operating. It wasn't anything like as hot as this year though. The rest of the summer's mentioned from the 90s don't stand out to me. I guess I was too busy to notice. This year the summer heat certainly has been relentless. The lack of rain over getting on for three months is so unusual for this country, only a brief couple of thunderstorms. Usually summer in this country is two weeks of sun and thats your lot. This year's extremities of the weather got under way early. Back in the first week of March we had the most snow for many years and a few days where it was -5. I wonder what this autumn and winter has in store.
