Aaah, good memories of 1980 too. The one tune that we used to hear throughout the summer of 1980 was Funkytown by Lipps Inc. It got on my nerves a bit at the time but since then it takes me back to a brilliant summer holiday in Bude. The holiday was brilliant but the journey home on the motorbike was dire, p***ing down all the way and that was the journey that my Belstaff trousers decided they didn't want to be waterproof anymore. Sam.

Good one Sam. A real summer sound has to be one that is played a lot on the radio and you just hear it everywhere so it sort of seeps into the daily life of a summer period. There have been one or two recent ones too, Slave to the Rhythm by Katy Perry was one from recently, as was Cake by the Ocean, Zara Larson’s Lush Life was another.
Anyhow back to the real world, my nominations for overall sounds of my favourite years are:
1975 - A tie between Typically Tropical, Barbados and 10cc, I’m not in love 1976 - Don’t go breaking my heart, Elton and Kiki 1977 - Rita Coolidge, Were all alone 1978 - John Travolta and Olivia Newton John, you’re the one that I want (a lousy, wet summer, but such a great year you can’t ignore it!) 1979 - Beach Boys, Lady Lynda 1980 - Xanadu, ELO and Olivia Newton John
If I was to include 1981, there could only be one choice, Ghost Town by The Specials, which I think is a great song, but it has a totally different feel to the previous years, rather than a light, summery sound it was a commentary on mass unemployment and inner city problems, reflecting the way that the country had suddenly lurched in.

One of my favourite summer sounds... and released just after the UK's hottest July on record in 1983, so quite good timing really I suppose Hearing it on the radio earlier today brought back some memories from my younger days... Vi

Actually, 1983 was a good year. I wasn’t that bothered about 81 or 82, or any of the years after 83, but that year was an enjoyable one, a sort of final fling.
I might do do an add on to retro charts to pick it up!

I love Step on by The Happy Mondays and did actually buy it on 7" vinyl at the time it was in the charts I also liked the band Black Grape which featured former Happy Mondays members including Shaun Ryder and Bez Steed

Name drop alert, ive met Bez a couple of times, his ex, Monica Ward, lives locally and they have a son who goes to the same school as my lad. Bez is just like he is on TV, mad but a right laugh! Monica is great, a good singer too, she should have made it big.

Was just about to reply to this thread last night and the 'net crashed...... But I can only remember some of the 70's songs mentioned being played a lot as far back as about 1978 - but didn't know what position the charts were! Didn't really discover the eras music till my adult years.
More Summers of 1980 onwards, I remember the family next door with teenage lads in that family inviting their mates/girlfriends around, lounging around in the garden, and the early 80's hits being played (although not sure if you could class them as Summer hits!) - just remember them playing Fun Boy 3's "The Telephone always rings" for some reason........
The 80's I was still largely at school so it was whatever was played at youth club meetings in the Summer months, like Michael Jackson, Amazulu "Too Good to be Forgotten" Madonna stuff, "Careless Whisper" at the end of the disco (not bad if you got the fittest girl there to dance with - of course it was never me.....) Dire Straights (er depended on the track..... but Money for Nothing has a great guitar intro!) and Axel F by Harold Faltamayer (I've probably got the spelling wrong!)
The ones put up by Dirty Epic are more my memories too (being a '71 birther) and the Madchester era, when I started clubbing after having enough money to spend going out, a year or so after I started work approx. 1990 - tracks like Guru Josh, A Guy called Gerald, "That's the Way Love is" by Ten City (1989).
So some random thoughts there!
