Also on Forces TV at the moment is 'Sykes', Eric Sykes is one for the 'things you don't get' thread for me as I've never seen his appeal. 'That's My Boy' is on ITV3, certainly one of the worst sitcoms ever seen with an abysmal theme tune though Jennifer Lonsdale who plays the young wife in it is nice, she has very few acting credits & 'That's My Boy' was her last.
Christopher Blake was in also in the sitcom 'Mixed Blessings', something tells me this won't be seen on tv again as it revolves around the fact that he's married to a Black woman. I can't see any clips of it on youtube though it was released on dvd by Network. Blake died aged 55.

Watching an episode of 'Bless This House' yesterday I noticed a jump during a scene between Robin Stewart & Sally Geeson's characters whilst they are going through a list of people they're considering inviting to a party, a line of dialogue had clearly been edited out.
Curious what the offending words might be I looked at a copy of the episode on dailymotion, refering to the list Sally says 'cross Julia McCarthy off' to which Mike replies 'you're kidding I've been stalking her for weeks', this line was cut.

Was it ITV3 you saw that on Arthur? Maybe it was cut of the extra adverts more-so than content?
Also stalking's more of a bigger problem now than it was back then too.

Yes doubtless it was cut because stalking is now a recognised offence, though if they're obliged to make cuts to fit the ads in they're more likely to cut a borderline offensive line than a harmless one. Odd to think there's presumably a number of people employed to vet programmes listening out for potentially offensive material.
Where do you draw the line though, just at words? For instance I watched a Public Eye episode last night on tptv & a character played by James Bolam talked about 'buying a girl' ( ie. paying a prostitute ) on a night out as if it was as commonplace as going for a drink, he talked about it in terms of 'letting off steam'. This made me think of the casual references to brothels in Auf W Pet which I've always found odd, I don't think the average man has ever viewed paying a prostitute as normal as buying a curry. Even so these are dated values rather than dated words but are they any less offensive to the viewers the censors are claiming to protect?

Agree on Eric Sykes, Arthur. I was never a big fan. I do remember a programme he did in the early/mid 70s with Hattie Jscques, Richard Wattis and Derek Guyler which wasn't very funny. It seemed to be a bit reminiscent of stuff from the 30s or 40s in a way, in the style of Arthur Askey or Tommy Hanley

Yes that's the show currently on Forces TV, 'Sykes', Hattie Jacques plays his sister. I think of Eric Sykes as a supporting artist like Harry Secombe or Graham Stark, men who lack the charisma of the likes of Sid James, Terry Scott, Harry Worth, Richard Briers, Richard O'Sullivan, etc. Sykes just strikes me as very ordinary.

I think Eric Sykes contributed a lot in terms of writing for various comedy performers.
As for Sykes, I can understand it has a much older feel to it, personally I found it quite amusing at times.
As for Harry Secombe, how dare you sir! Thought he was a great performer on The Goon Show and a very charismatic individual.
Was great in Oliver!

Yes Sykes wrote 'The Plank' & was no doubt part of that crowd that included The Goons, I've never found any of them very funny though including Spike Milligan. Much like Charlie Chaplin, I can't stand him but I love Laurel & Hardy.
My brother used to work alongside Harry Secombe's daughter, he told me that she told him that he hated doing 'Highway'

Spike was on the Parkinson show once: - Parky: So, Spike do like travelling? Spike: Well I came here didn't I. Trouser wettingly funny I'm sure you'll agree.

Milligan was obviously very influential but I'm not a fan, too 'zany' for me & he lacked warmth, some of his humour could be quite nasty. A similar performer I do like is Marty Feldman, he had Milligan's madness but he was likeable & good humoured with it.
