The violence had to be toned down in series 2 which meant that Hackett could only bring villains down with a rugby tackle and couldn't smack anyone about although he had one or two moments where he could rough up a suspect a bit. Mark McManus played a shady copper in one episode and Ken Hutchison played Sharkey in arguably the best episode.

I've seen series 1 only, an interesting watch for Sweeney fans as not only are many episodes blatant copies from The Sweeney, including lifting portions of dialogue, the same actors turn up, even the same cars. A casual viewer wouldn't notice but if you're familiar with The Sweeney you'll keep seeing things you've seen before. Patrick Mower shouts his way through the show, adopting a Northern accent, pretty funny stuff. His sidekick is Tim Cook's friend Pinhead. The show's producer Phillip Hinchcliffe had previously got into trouble for spicing up Doctor Who with more adult content, particularly violence. Target contains some stronger than average moments of violence, most notable being a scene where a pan of boiling water is thrown in a woman's face. Personally I enjoyed it, I like the fact that Mower is trying & failing to be a Regan type, that it's mostly humourless, gratuitously violent & rips off The Sweeney, all the while having that 'respectable' feel that BBC detective shows ( Bergerac, Shoestring, etc. ) have. I think I'll give it another watch in fact

Yes, I remember that scene with the pan of boiling water, and thought it was nasty. To me, the whole programme just didn’t work.

Suppose it was a TV series equivalent of The Squeeze but nowhere near as good it seems. Still be interesting to see a full episode or two.

If you manage to track down any episodes, a heads up that the first ep., 'Shipment', the only episode to be released commercially ( on VHS years ago ) is probably the worst & not representative of the series as a whole imo.

That's the one which features Aitch a fair bit in it Arthur and doesn't Patrick Mower do some crazy driving in a Bedford lorry too? I will try looking this up when (if) I get some time.

I thought Patrick Mower was watchable enough in this series, but the scripts needed more quality writers. They could have brought in Ranald Graham (whose final Sweeney episode Nightmare was very good), Leon Griffiths, Tony Hoare, Trevor Preston and Murray Smith who worked on the underrated Strangers starring Don Henderson. His stories were often a fine mix of action, grit and humour.
What would be good would be if a channel like DRAMA, Alibi or even a Freeview one screened Target (both series), completely uncut and without too many adverts.

I wonder if this series will ever get a DVD release as the complete series is in the BBC archive. There was some talk about it on another forum back in 2007, but it appears there was resistance to it from some of the cast members at the time.A A little bit of an update on what I said nearly a year ago. A private discussion group on Facebook seems to suggest that Graham Williams, creator of the series, might be behind the blocking of a DVD release. Apparently Patrick Mower doesn't seem to object to it coming out in the future. He's just fed up with people asking him about it Vi
