Good summary Saint, and I’ve noticed the difference in feel and atmosphere between the early episodes and the final ones. Series 1,2 and about two thirds of 3 were filmed in fairly quick succession between Autumn 74 and Autumn 75, they all used NHK 295M, and a blue Mark 3 Cortina.
The first of the two films then then interrupted filming, and the remainder of series 3 was filmed in the summer of 76 (note the burned grass!) these had a silver Granada, P regd, and a white Mark 3 Cortina, also on a P.
The final series was in two parts too, summer 77 (R regd Mark 1 Granada and silver Mark 4 Cortina S) the 1978 episodes had a mark 2 Granada and, I think the 2.0S Cortina again. The second group, ie the 76/7/8 filming do seem to have moved on a little and feel slightly more contemporary. I had started work at the time series 4 was shown, and the squad office was similar to the insurance office I worked in, everyone smoking and two hour liquid lunches in the pub!
Happy days!

Alex, in addition to The Sweeney boxset we would recommend getting the pilot episode Regan and the two films Sweeney! and Sweeney 2 to complete the entire Sweeney collection. The Amazon link that The Saint posted also shows these further down the page.
Whatever you do though, don't waste your hard-earned on the 2012 Nick Love version of the film The Sweeney with Ray Winstone and Ben Drew, it is cack! It is a shameless cash-in on the name, with a plot that has more holes than all of the Surrey golf courses put together.
Back to topic now and my first view of Life On Mars was when it was originally broadcast. I admit that for me I was sceptical about it initially because there had been a spate of cash-ins and remakes of old TV and films and I was concerned that this was another going down that route. How wrong was I? It took a couple of episodes for me to warm completely but from episode three onwards it became compulsive viewing.
Sam.

... they've arrived a day early. Ready to be snowed in tomorrow! We must be the only place in the UK without any snow! Have you watched any of The Sweeney yet Alex?

Only one episode so far, Guv. The world is conspiring against my TV time; I have a dance show in a couple of weeks so rehearsals are frequent, I’m trying to finish painting the hall so that I can put everything back on the walls and, you know, all nighters fighting crime with you! However, I’m off on Sunday and Myke other half isn’t so that’s the plan thus far. I promise I will report back when I get there. I do want to watch the first one again, but did enjoy what I’ve seen so far!

Good luck with the dance show Bols. I do envy you getting to watch them for the first time. Why not post an episode dissection for each episode as you watch them? All the episode threads are already in place for each series over in the Sweeney section.

Oh my god, guys. I’m on episode 3. How did I not know about this before now? It’s great! And weirdly familiar territory because of Mars and Ashes which ... I suppose is odd because it’s meant to be the other way around!
The in-laws are looming so I haven’t got time to post about it properly but will do later.

Series 1? Thin Ice, one of the ones which divides opinion, but I like it.

Glad you're enjoying it though Bols. You have some great episodes ahead of you. Don't forget that it shares links with LoM in other ways too, such as the stuntman who worked on Life On Mars was the stunt man and bit part actor from The Sweeney - Peter Brayham. Life On Mars was the last thing he worked on. There are other actors who appeared in both too, such as Peter Wight who played Frank Miller in LoM & he played Jimmy Park in the Sweeney episode "Victims" Gene.
