What began as a comedy thriller series about a friendly, womanizing Irish detective turned into something much darker, tougher, grimmer and grittier by its 3rd series, winning rave reviews and showing what a fine underrated actor James Nesbitt is. With real-life former undercover cop Peter Bleksley as technical advisor, the stories became more realistic and suspenseful with quite a few hair-raising action set-pieces and menacing villains for Murphy to take down.

I watched the last couple of series and this was pretty good stuff, I think I have the rest of it somewhere and must take another look.

I think Nesbitt even won an Irish TV award for his performance in the later series. I thought he did an excellent job conveying the character's anguish, frustration and sadness at his job.
