I was an enthusiastic participant in the old TOTP reruns threads on the old TV Lounge forum, that's during the reruns of the 70s episodes. The golden age!

I've been watching the 1988 reruns of TOTP
Often truly dreadful
I say watching, more often fast forwarding through an episode and just lingering on the odd, occasional decent tune
There was some absolute dreck in the top ten in 1988 - very little has aged well
Brother Beyond anyone? Breathe? What were the pop kids thinking?
There was a thread on here that accompanied the TOTP episodes as they made their way through the 70's and 80's but as you'll see, the interest waned pretty quickly once the mid 80's episodes arrived. Very poor fare it has to be said. I have been watching a lot of the 1988 repeats but to get specific bits n pieces when the House/Dance music boom began around that time. Like Marmite you love it or hate it but it was at least something different and something (Acid House culture) which shook up a very bland pop music industry right across the genres up to that point.
Got to admit it was the tracks which didn't necessarily make the Top 40 from that period which became the classics, years since and a lot of the likes of Yazz/Beatmasters/(early) Coldcut etc. hasn't aged well either but it created an impetus for a whole new scene to emerge and keep changing and reinventing itself for more than a decade afterwards and as cheesy as they are I do still like the S-Express/Bomb the Bass tracks from that period. Royal House (Todd Terry) and hopefully Stakker Humanoid who became Future Sound of London are up in a few weeks time so may be worth a watch even to see how different they are from what else was around in '88.
But yes pop music wise you do have to wade through an awful lot of s*** before you get to anything which is half decent but that's said for the TOTP's from any era. Next year '89 will be the one with the Monday's/Roses on along with 808 State etc. so things will get better IMO.
Interestingly a couple '88 performances have been canned and it's not for obvious reasons nor the Mike Smith issue so can only think it's a music rights thing but still good to see them.

Hope I don't offend any of their fans on here but thought Fairground Attraction were worse than these ponies. Dirge for me.

I had the misfortune to catch Fairground Attraction a few episodes back. Terrible.
You make a good point about some of the forthcoming house tunes we should be.
You're also right about Bomb The Bass and Yazz. I wonder if sufficient time will go by to allow them to sound better. I doubt it. It's the lack of any rough edges I think

I watched 8th September 1988 last night
Introduced by Mike Read and Andy Crane. Andy Crane?! Who he? I have no recollection of him at all.
Turns out he was a kids TV presenter.
Highlight was the video for Yello's The Race
What a bizzare group they were - but genius too
Marc Almond opened the show with Tears Run Rings - a song I barely remember but which sounded surprisingly good, and enlivened by a decent in studio performance
There's new number one too - finally Yazz has been deposed
The bad news - it's Phil Collins with Groovy Kind of Love from Buster in its place
Jane Wieldin's video was on after the number one and her elfin good looks are always welcome. Phew. Finished on a high.

Andy Crane was DJ - and then went on to alternately present Childrens BBC during the "Broom Cupboard" days with Andi Peters, Philip Schofield. I think he may have also (at some point) presented or stood in on a couple of the BBCs Saturday Morning kids shows - Live & Kicking / Going Live.
Then he seemed to vanish...
Always loved that "Yello" track.
I think it pops up on Now 13. (The last one I have on vinyl!)

I think Andy had just taken over from Phillip on Cbbc around this time ? Cant remember but he did do Saturday morning T.V. He is a DJ on DAB station Greatest Hits planetradio.co.uk/greatest-hits/entertainment/music/andy-crane/ His show is on in the early afternoon I think. I've tuned in a couple of times and its alright. Greatest Hits is a Manchester based station so those up in the north west will probably be able to get it on FM
