The Sweet were excellent, my favourite of theirs was Love is like Oxygen from 78. Who can forget Little Willy too!

Brilliant band & much like Slade definitely underrated due to the glam pigeonholing, once you listen to their albums & not just their popular Chinichap hits you realise how good they were. It's odd that they appeared to have a teenybopper audience, if you listen to their live lp at the Rainbow it's anything but The Osmonds, it sounds closer to punk or heavy rock than pop, at times it is very noisy & you wonder what on earth young girls were doing there. Here's a thread on 'Scene' from last year- 43tv.proboards.com/thread/833/scene-bbc-schools-series

I think they must have been an influence on Judas Priest, Def Leppard and the new wave of British heavy rock scene. There’s touches of a Deep Purple and The Who in their sound. Apparently there was some bitterness towards Queen who they thought had appropriated their sound. The Sensational Sweet box set is available through Amazon. It’s contains all albums from 1971-78, a singles and B-sides disc, a live disc and a BBC performances disc. All for £45 and I’ve already got mine.

Yes I read somewhere that they considered Queen had ripped them off though I can't remember where & whether it concerned certain songs or just their 'sound' generally, the vocal harmonies in particular are very Queen like.

I love this band and yes indeed they were underated and considered a teeny band. The band didn't always like some of the chinnychap material and wanted to diversify. They got rave reviews for the gig they played with The Who at Charlton Football ground where they smashed it

I know Pete Townshend was a fan of the Sweet but I don’t think they played either 74 or 76 Charlton.

The Charlton gig was an opportunity that would have broken them to UK rock fans. As some of us can remember, we could get terribly snotty about our music and The Sweet delivering a hard driving set, in front of a discerning audience would have been a winner in my opinion.
