One of the many excellent characteristics of the Clement & Le Frenais scripts is the unseen, almost mythical characters.
Due to the context and despite often minimal detail, we almost feel we know them.
Or more likely we know someone like them.
Thought it might be interesting to hear views from forum members.
One of my favourites is Little Hutch, who is referenced in more than one episode.
'I was just on my way to buy some shoes. But on the way, who should I run into, but Little Hutch.........'
Priceless.

Or the Reverend Jeffcock, wonder what he got with the green shield stamps And one of many references to 1970s culture - loyalty cards had not been thought of.

Wendy Thwaite was another unseen character - one of Bob's ex's.
We never saw Terry's wife either - Jutta Baumgarten.

Sorry if the name has already been mentioned (as I can't remember) but I was thinking - Terry's uncle who died in he nursing home and who's funeral it is, I think in the final regular episode in the 2nd series. Terry thinks very highly of him and won't have a word said against him, but everyone else (fellow nursing home residents evidently!) say he was a right old cantankerous, devious and tightfisted so and so!
This is eventually given as warning from history from the other old boy that knew him (one played by the same actor who was the night watchman in Jigsaw, the Sweeney episode) who describes what really happened and warns the same fall out could happen with Terry and Bob if they're not careful.

Think you're referring to 'me old Uncle Jacob' as Terry said. 'He was a character'. A parallel is drawn between Jacob and his best friend Joe Hargreaves and Terry and Bob. Once again the quality of the script provides a deep insight into an unseen character. Good choice, Gerry.
