Recorded 50 years ago this year, the definitive cover version that is better than the original has to be "All Along The Watchtower" by The Jimmi Hendrix Experience :-
Originally recorded by Bob Dylan of course.

Yes Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower is brilliant. Another cover of a Bob Dylan song which I think is better than the original is Mr Tambourine Man by The Byrds. It reached #1 in both the UK and US in 1965.

The Byrds version was infinitely better than Dylan.
Another cover version that I find better by a country mile is Matthews Southern Comfort's rendition of Woodstock. It's also better than the version put out by Crosby Stills Nash & Young. Incidentally all released the same year - 1970.

Strangely, when I saw the title of this thread I thought instantly of Bob Dylan because I like a lot of his songs ... but only when they're covered. I can't really say I enjoy any of his own music, but there have been some fabulous covers. The original of All Along The Watchtower makes me cringe because my dad is a huge Hendrix fan and so I grew up only knowing that rendition. I can't help but laugh if I am listening to the original when what *should* (to my mind) be an incredible passage of guitar is played on a harmonica A good choice with Woodstock, too, Gene. Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah is another one which pops into my head - much preferred to the original.

I was only talking about this at work the other day. I too much prefer the covers of Dylan songs to his versions. All along the Watchtower is not the same without Hendrix soloing.

All along the Watchtower is not the same without Hendrix soloing. Nothing is, Guv. Tragic that he was taken so young. A member of the 27 club. I sometimes wonder what he would have done over the decades. It's almost like he was here for a short time to shake everything up completely in the world of guitars and then, just like that, he was gone again.
