After bringing up the appalling cover of this tune in the >>> Cover versions for Room 101 <<< thread I thought I'd have a listen to the best version which also happens to be a cover of the original... Original of Everlasting Love by Robert Knight: Best version by Love Affair: Sam.

I'd say that is the standard for that track

I think Steve Ellis was 17 when the song was recorded, to look at him you wouldn't think he'd have a voice like that.

I inherited my love for the group Japan from my older sister - I really liked some of their older late 70's stuff before David Sylvian got up himself.
Anyway my wife was flicking through the TV a few weekends ago and hovered over a screening of Funny Girl... and I said hey that sounds familiar...
The Barbara Streisand original...
And this is the Japan Cover (little did I know it was a cover - but it's a better version in my opinion)
Japan related, I recently read Mick Karn's biography - RIP and such a sad state of events back then when music moguls like Simon Napier-Bell took bands for all their future earnings.

Think, on balance, I have to go with Barbara Streisand on this one, sorry, B

I didn't know that track was a cover and have only heard the Japan version before. Japan were definitely ahead of their time , I'm a fan

Answer Me. The original was by Frankie Laine in the 50s, Barbara Dicksons 1975 cover is much better.

Watching Now 70s music channel last night and up came the original of Mama Told Me Not To Come by Three Dog Night:
but after hearing that again for the first time in donkeys years I think that the Tom Jones version with The Stereophonics was a better version with the stronger vocals from Tom Jones and Kelly Jones:
