Who knew? Blondie's "Hanging On The Telephone" is a cover version of an original by The Nerves. With Debbie Harry on vocals, it's preferable to the original I always thought this was a Blondie original as a youngster but heard The Nerves 1976 version on an oldies station many years ago . I agree with you Windy that the Blondie version is the superior version. I suppose we can put that down to not only the band but Mike Chapman who produced the album Parallel Lines to a high standard. Listening to the two versions the Blondie track is really polished and the fact that its in the same arrangement and knocks spots off the original says a lot. Clem's drumming is great the guitar riff is tighter and the addition of Jimmy Destri's keyboard part really adds to the Blondie version. The vocal is of course the cherry on the cake. A fantastic example all round of how to improve an original.

I've been listening to Mountain quite a lot, only knew of them from 'Nantucket Sleigh Ride' as part of it was famously used as the theme to the tv series 'Weekend World'. Leslie West was their guitarist/singer, he was apparently Pete Townshend's favourite guitarist & he recorded guitar tracks for their album 'Who's Next'.
This is a great version of 'This Wheel's On Fire', written by Bob Dylan but famously sung by Julie Driscoll & used on the credits to 'Absolutely Fabulous'-

Just appearing on my Youtube playlist tonight while surfing (not that I ever searched for it) was the original of Jackie Wilson Said by Van Morrison. I must admit that I was completely oblivious to the fact that Van Morrison was the original artist or that Dexy's version was a cover.
But it was and it is and again I must admit that I don't rate Van Morrison as an artist which when listening to the original does nothing to sway my opinion either.
Original:
Dexy's cover:

I also didn't realise that the Dexys Midnight Runners version was a cover and was also oblivious to the Van Morrison version. I still prefer the Dexys version Steed

Dion recorded the original version of 'The Wanderer' back in 1961... but Status Quo's version in late 1984 is the best cover version of the song, and probably better than the original. Vi

The original 1961 Dion version was re released in 76 and charted again in the early part of the summer.

The original version of 'Everytime You Go Away' appeared on the Daryl Hall and John Oates album 'Voices' in 1980. However, it was not released as a single. Five years later a single version by Paul Young was released and was a big hit in the UK and US. I prefer this version myself Vi

The original is very good, but you can't beat The Beat's version of Tears Of A Clown :-
