Paul Masson's Californian wines became popular in the late 70s/early 80s after they got Orson Welles onboard for their TV ads. I don't know whether these outtakes paint a good or bad picture of the brand. All I know is that whenever I see a bottle on the shelves now I can't help thinking "Mwaaaaaaa..." .

I wonder how many takes that took in the end? Possibly 3, as the 3rd is sync marked.
If you pause it on Take 3, when the clapper snaps, an X is marked on the picture for one frame. This is the editors mark to sync the soundtrack up. They'd match the X on the Sound and Picture strip.

For some reason, I used to love these series of adverts.
I used to sit mesmorised wondering how they did some of them.

It's amazing what a bit of re-dubbing and clever editing can do including the slightly sped up bit in the first scene to match his "sober" read on the re-dub. They should have left in his "Mwaaaa" though in my opinion

Everyone remembers the one with JR Hartley, but this was my favourite Yellow Pages ad. I'm a bit biased though as it features the local lad made good from my village - the late great Peter Armitage.

Peter was in Peak Practice sometime around 93/94, around the time I started working on it.
He was also in The Sweeney "Big Spender" too.

Wasn't he in Coronation Street? I think he was Kevin Webster's dad, at the time when I used to catch bits of it, my wife used to watch it then.

Yes he was Kevin Webster's dad who apparently ran off with Fred Elliot's wife.
The actor who plays JR Hartley was in a Sweeney episode as well, 'Hard Men' & the voice on the ad is Joss Ackland from 'Feet Of Clay'.

YES!! And me! I was and still am fascinated by hoe the oil gathers itself in the spanner and the colour of it is lovely! Like liquid gold.

YES!! And me! I was and still am fascinated by hoe the oil gathers itself in the spanner and the colour of it is lovely! Like liquid gold. On the closing shot of this advert, look very closely...
At 00:00:26 you get the wide shot with the Oil built up close to the spanner - this was pre-prepared first.
At 00:00:27 - 00:00:28 - there is an edit, which cuts to a shot now with the spanner filled up.
Obviously, this shot was set up with the oil just outside the spanner. Camera stopped, the spanner centre filled up, and then the camera run again.
As for the shots with the fluid in motion - it is likely a fluid (other than oil) was used, something with a thick viscosity. I've seen similar done before in drinks ads where they make out a path for the fluid to travel in wax, and use a slightly thicker viscosity fluid which is easier to control and clings to the wax.
Not a Special FX person or a Science Teacher but that's how I've seen some drinks ads done!
