Sex Pistols - Somethin else* love this, probably my favourite Pistols song Chic - I want your love* Edwin Starr - Contact* Skids - Into the valley* Gene Chandler - Get Down* Village People - In the navy. YMCA was, in my opinion, the only thing they ever did that was any good Darts - Get it - mmm 50/50 Thin Lizzy - Waiting for an alibi* Queen - don't stop me now* played a lot but I still like it Toto - Hold the line* Cars - Just what I needed* Violinski - Clog Dance* Dooleys - Honey I'm Lost* - yes I know, guilty pleasure! Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing* all time great Neil Diamond - Forever in blue jeans* Doobie Brothers - What a fool believes* David Essex - Imperial wizard* Pretenders - stop your sobbing* Art Garfunkel - Bright Eyes - not overkeen
Brilliant month again, and another little memory brought back by David Essex's Imperial Wizard, was on the car radio on the way to a 5 a side match after work one night in March 79 in this bloke at our office's Viva! Oh, and we ended up in the Ralph Abercrombie afterwards!

April now, and the standard is being maintained:
Racey - Some Girls* Squeeze - Cool for Cats* - absolute great, one of the best of the year, even mentions The Sweeney! Sister Sledge - Hes the greatest dancer* love this too M - Pop Musik* Milk and Honey - Halleluiah - an oddity, Israel won the Eurovision song contest Three Degrees - The Runner* - The Degrees had had hits in the 74/75 period then went quiet, they came back strongly in 78/9. I also used to like Shiela Ferguson! Wings - Good Night Tonight* Supertramp - The Logical Song* Kate Bush - Wow* - another lovely lady I used to like! Amii Stewart - Knock on wood* Gonzalez - Havent stopped dancing yet* Generation X - Valley of the dolls* Members - Offshore Banking business*
Another memory brought back by Supertramp, in April that year one of the girls in our office left so we went on a leaving do in Manchester after work and ended up in a disco, Sister Sledge was played too, and I ended up getting one of the all night buses home some guy on the bus had a transistor and The Logical Song came on just before I got off at Whitefield to walk the last couple of miles home at about 1.30 in the morning, remember humming it to myself all the way back!!
Supetramp and an orange and white Greater Manchester Transport bus, another little window into a great month!

It's easy to forget how big Supertramp were in the 1970s. I remember my older brother having the 'Breakfast in America' album in '79 which was a huge hit on both sides of the pond. When looking back, more fashionable acts like The Clash are highlighted as the big sounds of 1979. I remember 'Breakfast in America', Pink Floyds 'The Wall', ELO,big disco acts etc ruling the roost on our TV screens, radios, and in the publics affection. Music historians can have selective memories, and often forget what was popular.

Very, very true, Bojan. They tend to rewrite it to suit their own narrative too. You quite often hear of "the punk explosion of 1976" in reality, punk was completely unknown until the very end of 76, and only really emerged into public knowledge in 77. Even then, the charts were heavily populated with lightweight pop acts.

May, before the end of the day. Another great month, memories of me getting my first motor, my Austin A40, and listening to a lot of these great tracks while driving around in it. I also managed to pull the previous year's Radcliffe carnival queen, Elaine... 79 was a top year, some great memories too. Lets not spoil it so we will ignore the fact that the electorate voted in someone stupid in the General election that month..(ooh, bit of politics!!)
PS, crashed and burned with the carnival queen bird after about 6 weeks........
Blondie - Sunday Girl* Roxy Music - Dance away* Abba - Does your mother know* Eruption - One way ticket* Gary Moore - Parisienne Walkways* Bowie - Boys keep swinging* Dickies - Banana Splits* They were a tongue-in-cheek punk band who did all sorts of daft stuff, like a 100mph version of Nights in white satin! One of their albums was called Stukas over Disneyland! Police - Roxanne - I may be a bit controversial at this point but I have never liked them. Partly because at the time, the pub we all used to go in at lunchtimes, the now sadly-gone George & Dragon in Manchester had them on the juke box non stop for weeks and it drove me mad!!!! Earth Wind & fire and The Emotions - Boogie Wonderland* Undertones - Jimmy Jimmy* Monks - Nice legs shame about the face - sort of OK ish I suppose Sparks - Number one song in heaven* Donna Summer - Hot Stuff* ELO - Shine a little love* Tubes - Prime Time* - love this,. deserved to be a much bigger hit Linda Clifford - Bridge over Troubled water* - 100mph disco version of the Simon & Garfunkel classic, oddly good!

I think The Shadows did a cover version of 'Parisienne Walkways' later that same year on an album called 'String of Hits' but, IMO, not as good as the Gary Moore single.

Remember the tape recorder from an earlier thread? Well I used to sing Pop Musik & Some Girls over and over into it. Funnily enough I've just ordered McCartney II which has Goodnight Tonight as a bonus track, looking forward to that. My birthday in April too, great month all round
