Funny you should mention abusive teachers as I happened to watch a clip of 'Educating Yorkshire' a day ago & thought the teachers featured in that show were more like social workers. Most of the teachers I had at secondary school barely knew my name.
I'm surprised Ken Loach tricked those kids until getting whacked like that, that's taking his realistic style into dangerous territory, but it does make for a convincing scene.

You should meet some of the teachers at our local comp... I've had some corkers of run ins with a couple of them. Those in particular weren't (it seems) very well versed on the Education Act - and don't like having it quoted to them either. Taking our youngest out of mainstream education at the end of this Summers term.
Home schooling will be the better option for him.
Ironically, both my kids love "Kes" - the eldest has a book. I think the eldest studied it in English. Nice to see they are still looking at it.

"In your next life you will be a paper bag" was another pronouncement! I've gone one better and made cardboard box. You were lucky....
I used a Shoebox in the middle of the road, and when our Dad came home he used to beat us senseless and dive about on our graves..... And you try and tell the kids today that....

We did also have the "ecky thump" incident.
Assembly, towards the end of the lower 6th, about June 77. This lad who was in the year below me, obviously didn't want to do his GCE O levels, sneaked up behind the headmaster while he was taking the assembly, put on a big flat cap, and with a cry of "ecky ecky " whacked the head, over the head, with a black pudding.
He got expelled, it made the Daily Mirror and the Manchester Evening News!

Bill Oddie would have been proud!

I think it might have been a thing with some of the directors in the 70s going for realism. Apparently Alan Clarke whilst directing the murder ball scene in the gym in Scum announced "OK, murder ball scene now... be careful everyone". Then went privately to one team and whispered, "Watch yourselves.. I hear the lads on the other team intend to start some trouble", then said the same thing to the other team. Franc Roddam did something similar on the beach fight scenes in Quadrophenia - "These policeman extras aren't taking this seriously. When we roll, hit them for real".
