Yes I noticed that and thought for a minute it was steam from the hot water.

Now that you mention it Steve I remember being quite surprised ( rather than shocked ) by that scene & thinking 'they couldn't show that today' when I saw Payroll a few years ago, I think it's because the child is a toddler rather than a baby & the nudity is very obvious. I think if it had been a few years later in a film like 'Poor Cow' it wouldn't seem as surprising. A perfectly innocent scene but I wonder what audiences made of it in 1961 compared to today. The problem is that censoring these things tends to draw more attention to them, but the censors would argue that there is a chance it may 'provoke' those with unsavoury tendencies, particularly in an age where material is shared online.

Another very good film on last night "Payroll" a 1961 black and white crime thriller about a wages van job in Newcastle, Tom Bell, Billie Whitelaw and Michael Craig were in it and there were some fantastic location shots. The approach to breaking into the van was not exactly subtle, they kept crashing two Ford Thames Trader tipper wagons into it until the door locks gave way, then made their getaway in a Jag.
I started watching this last night but was disappointed that they had to blur the bit with Billie Whitelaw washing the girl in the bath. What a sad comment on today's society. I didn't notice that scene Steve. I did see the film on DVD about eight or nine years ago, and I don"t remember any bluring, obviously they would have not altered the DVD. Does anybody remember when Julia Somerville the former ITN Newsreader was investigated by the police for taking an innocent photo of her own daughter when the child was having a bath. These are indeed sad times.

We visited some of the locations in Newcastle in March this year. The scene where Billie Whitelaw follows Françoise Prévost takes in the Long Steps where 10 years later George Sewell would chase Michael Caine in Get Carter. 46 years later a bunch of retro nuts would do the same

Worth watching for the fantastic locations and the motors, even though it is a good film anyway. I thought that armoured van was a funny looking thing, I suspect it was a mock up done for the film, probably based on a Morris J type. The Jag was a Mark 1, made from 55 to 59, the better known Mark 2 was based on it. Finally, a steam loco too, couldn't make out if it was a V2 or a K3
