Only Fiction Factory remotely Ok in the line up of the first edition. Seeing these re runs is emphasising how my interest in the charts went quickly into decline at this period. There is a local radio station near me called Canalside and on my way home in the car I usually put it on as they have a "magic month" where they will run down the charts from the equivalent month in a given year.
Its sometimes late 80s/early 90s, which are of no interest to me at all, but a couple of days last month were 1977 and 78 so I was made up. Last night it was 1983 so I thought "mm, might be OK" but there were actually only about two I liked, what I considered to be decent stuff was getting more thin on the ground than I remembered. There were a few good songs from this year, and 84, but were interspersed with a lot of dross.

Good shout Cartman. Having watched these since start of the repeats showing 1976. I thought 76 had quite a lot of middle of the road tosh with a few gems 77 saw a marked improvement 78 absolutely smashed it 79 was good but started the downward curve 80 continued this 81 was like 76 and 82 saw another positive change in fortunes 83 Was a good year best of the 80s so far and 84 has started well. I expect things to tail off far quicker than the 70s peak.
The 19th Jan 84 edition was a poor showing and like you fiction factory was the best here. The only other survivors from my fwd fest were China crisis and Paul Mac.

Yep, slim pickings now for me too. The only highlights for me were Lennon & McCartney. Shame about losing the Mike Smith episodes but I doubt there was much more there that I would have watched, maybe The Smiths & Echo & The Bunnymen. Still, I'll keep tuning in. It is retro afterall

Caught last nights ep on iPlayer this morning. A bit hit and miss but my pick of the bunch were Big Country, Fiction Factory and China Crisis. @~*! that Mike Smith... his block on BBC repeats will cost me seeing The Bunnymen's Killing Moon... much better than anything on last night!

I really got into music in a big way in 75, and thought that year, and 76, were good, but 77 better, with, to me, the peak being 78. That was just amazing, Punk, New Wave and Disco were a fantastic combination. 79 was very nearly as good, Punk had pretty much faded away, but the new influences of Two Tone and Ska kept up the momentum, with Disco still in there.
80 was a slight decline, the only new influence were the New Romantics, which were OK, but less so than the previous year, to me, this was the very last fling of this exciting and creative era, which trickled on into 81, with its craze for crappy medley records in the summer.
I thought 82 was a bit of a dip, a brief slight uplift in 83, tapering off in 84. From 84 to the mid 90s followed a long period of crap, rescued by Britpop in about 95.

Been a bit quiet on here lately, not sure if it's because it's holiday season or just a poor era musically. As I have mentioned previously, this is not my favourite period of popular music and most episodes have been spent on the ffd button. I have however enjoyed the following: John Lennon - Nobody Told Me (on the same episode as Paul McCartney no less ) Joe Fagin _ That's Living Alright (Because of AWP, not the song so much) Alexei Sayle - Ullo John, Got A New Motor? Break Machine - Street Dance (being half robot myself I have an affinity for the dance moves ) Been a few missed due to one perv or another (such as Shannon - Let The Music Play) but I'll have to wait a few weeks until more John Lennon and some Depeche Mode Hopefully everyone will be back from their hols too

Yeah it ebbs and flows Steve. We've had some good weather lately so I guess people have better things to do than sit in and watch telly😅
I've had a couple of episodes laying about on the box. Just watched Feb 23 1984 and it wasn't a lot to write home about. Best on this one were Rockwell and Nik Kershaw.
Notice they are still persisting with the Top ten video show.

Sorry I disappeared everyone - that's if you noticed I'd been missing ! To run a famous old sitcom line by you "I had a bit of trouble" with my old PC and have had to totally start from scratch setting everything up on a new one with all that entails ! After nearly two days solid of piecing my "virtual life" back together, I don't think I can handle looking at this monitor any more - so I am going to look at my nice big telly instead for a while at a few old TOTP84 shows and report back later ! Glad, I found this forum again, I was missing the banter !!
