I think Simon Bates probably liked 'Golden Brown' until someone told him it was about heroin use.

I thought that was Hank Marvin in the thumbnail above Gene.

He actually does bear a certain resemblance to The Syrup in that clip And speaking of Hank Marvin, his barnet looks a bit sus in this smudge for a man in his 70s

Ah, nice to see a bit more activity on here than of late - evening all ! First of all, though I probably agree that a lot of the music and the acts on the current era of TOTP being repeated don't quite have that special sentimental appeal musically to me either, we are still looking back at a period which is well over 30 years ago and it is quite fascinating to watch the shows again knowing what has been and gone since. Just one small example was Mike Read saying "there go the pips" when pretending to be on the phone to Stevie Wonder - I had forgotten all about "pips" in fact I can't remember the last time I used a payphone !! Also, a lot of the acts being shown now are my age or there abouts and you can really relate to what they must have been influenced by and what they would have been into at the time they were making their hits ... whilst I was working in a dreadful bank clerk job !! Anyway ... The first of the two shows I've seen since last on here was domintated by videos, two of which featured large chunks from films I've never seen, the aforementioned Paul McCartney song and "Electric Dreams", but we were coming into an era when Big Films came hand in hand with Big Hits - great for us quizmasters to use in an 80s film 'n' music round !! The third one, like a lot of mid-80s vids remains a mystery to me, I have no idea what was going on in The Cars "Drive" promo, certainly nothing much to do with the song's lyrics. They might as well have shown footage of starving children in Africa to go with it - oh, hang on ... Read & Vance gave it their best shot at being funny and though the results were borderline, anything has to be better than being Simon Bates ! Their episode was a pretty enjoyable one with decent songs by good quality acts like Alison Moyet, Paul Young & Style Council in the studio, plus two eye catching highlights earlier on - Kim Wilde singing a song I had completely forgotten about, but looking WOW!!!! in her amazing tight leather outfit and Wham! as always giving it 100% on "Freedom" complete with George Michael's arms frantically going at 110 shakes a minute - there was never any doubt at who was going to become a solo star out of that group !! Meanwhile, the Sky Planner is about to kick in and record tonight's show, so I'll be back here with my thoughts and observations soon !

I'm still watching these but the performances I enjoy are few and far between but I did enjoy seeing Paul McCartney and No More Lonely Nights followed by Julian Lennon. I was reminded how much he resembled his dad in sound an in vision. Too Late For Goodbye's was a good song in my opinion and it must have taken some nerve to follow in his dad's footsteps, bearing in mind the obvious comparisons critics would have made.
Another standout for me was Depeche Mode and Blasphemous Rumours. Not usual TOTP fare but well done to both the production team and the band for performing as it's not played much at all and does not lend itself to live performances due to they way in which it was recorded.
Not long now until the might juggernaut that is Band Aid!!

Saw some of the last edition, everyone was wearing 'Feed The World' t shirts. Black Lace again with Do do do come on & do the conga Do do do is right, of the doggy variety. Watching Tina Turner's Private Dancer video I wondered how she came to be such a huge artist, or indeed how artists like Bonnie Tyler or latter day Rod Stewart did, I find all of them painful to listen to.

I have never got why Tina Turner did so well. Not a fan of any track she did and is it just me, or does anyone else expect Auf Pet's Barry Taylor to appear in this pop video at 2 minutes 2 seconds in? (If you don't get what I'm on about, I'm sure someone will come on and explain!)

Barry's theme. According to a site I looked at, the synthesisers used on 'What's Love Got To Do With It' were- Emulator II, Roland MKS80 Super Jupiter, Yamaha DX7, and an Oberheim OB8. I've had a listen to samples of all of the various sounds they produce on youtube but haven't yet heard Barry's distinctive sound.

Yeah I've heard that 'Barry riff' in many a synthpop, house, techno and electronica tube in my time!
