I'm just wondering if anyone on the forum has heard of, or seen a British crime film called "Clegg" which came out in 1970? I watched this film on YouTube the other week.
The hero is (As is so very often the case.) a private eye who is fairly badly off financially, who gets a job where he stands a chance of making a few bob for a change.
I'm pretty sure it was mentioned a few times on the former forum, but I couldn't swear to it. Maybe this film is a lot better known than I imagine, if so, please excuse my naivety.
I read on the internet that it was made for just six thousand quid. There was only one actor in the film I remember seeing in other productions. The guy on the main part was an actor who apparently had been in the sixties BBC police series Softly Softly.
The film moved at a quick pace and I thought they did quite well considering the low budget. It was funny in parts. The amount of bullets he sprays into his adverseries was incredible, and I've never seen anyone kissing like him in a film before. He practically eats the ladies.
I actually enjoyed it and I wish there had been a follow up made
Anyway, as I said I was just wondering if other members are aware of this film and have any further information on it.

Would that be "Clegg" as in "The Bullet Machine"?
I haven't seen it Charles but have heard of it before. I'll try and get hold of it and give it a viewing.

Thats right Gene The bullet machine. It was made on a low budget but it wasn't too bad if you have an hour to spare sometime.
As I finished that last post, and talking about low budget films, I was reminded about the Channel 4 series in the ninties called the worst of Hollywood. The funniest one they showed was Plan Nine From Outer Space made about 1958 I believe. This film was so bad it was hilarious. Anyway I've dug out the film Ed Wood 1994 (Director of P.N.F.O.S.) which I've not seen before, and I'm watching it right now.

Yes, I remember we talked about 'Clegg' aka 'The Bullet Machine' before Charles. Directed by Lindsay Shonteff, a Canadian who trotted out low budget films in the 60s, 70s & 80s. He's probably best known for his James Bond spoofs, a few of his films aren't bad at all including 'Devil Doll', 'Clegg' & imo his best film 'Night After Night After Night' which stars Gilbert Wynne from 'Clegg' as a copper on the trail of a sex killer, the chief suspect is played by Donald Sumpter.
Few of his films are commercially available though 'Permissive', a 1970 film about a groupie & a rock band, is on BFI blu ray. Some years ago his son had a website where you could download his films for about £4 a time.
I did see Clegg a few years ago & although it's rough & obviously very low budget as you say it's fast moving & entertaining as the trailer shows-

Good trailer Arthur thanks for the extra info' I will try and get hold of a few more Shonteff films.
One scene I found a bit amusing, was when after a bad beating during which Clegg took some bad punishment in the nether regions. He managed to get back to his flat only to find a nice young lady in his bed, and proceeded to show her some hospitality.

I will happily endorse Clegg as the most enjoyable load of b***ocks I've watched. It's like a rubbish version of 'Gumshoe' but so bad it's entertaining.

'Big Zapper' is another Shonteff masterpiece with Linda Marlowe playing Harriet Zapper, a female version of Clegg, there was even a sequel 'The Swordsman' aka 'Zapper's Blade Of Vengence' featuring Alan Lake.
A couple of similar films from that era are 'Moon' aka 'Man Of Violence' & 'The Big Switch' both directed by Pete Walker, slightly bigger budget & more serious in nature but like 'Clegg' they look horribly dated compared to Get Carter made around the same time. The character of Moon is very unusual as he is openly bisexual, you see him in bed with 70s dolly bird Luan Peters & also a bloke he picks up in a bar, he's played by Michael Latimer who is Regan & Carter's superior in 'Golden Fleece'.

Big Zapper looks pretty entertaining Arthur. I wouldn't mind watching that one, (Linda Marlowe is nice.) but I've just had a look on Amazon and they wanted thirty Quid for it, no chance. I will wait and see if The price comes down sometime. It's not on YouTube at the moment.
