When I first watched Life on Mars with my parents they recognised Philip Glenister from Island At War which I’d never seen. They reminded me of this during lockdown so I bought the DVD: I like war time programmes anyway (at least when in a civilian setting, I’m not sure I’d enjoy anything set at the front line or anything!) and obviously I had to see what his German accent was like . I’ve been back to work over a month now which is mad but I’d forgotten I’d got this DVD and finally started watching a few nights ago. Didn’t say anything to my other half about why we were watching this particular series and he doesn’t make an appearance until well into the first episode “ahhh I understand why we are watching this now” was heard when he finally did appear on screen. I’ve got to say ... none of the main German cast are German and it shows! They’ve given them absolutely faultless scripts - there’s no weird word choices or broken English phrases and I think it’s unrealistic. Though admittedly not as unrealistic as their planes!! (I know it was 2004 and only ITV so should probably stop taking the Michael). But yes, it’s interesting viewing, especially as I think he was relatively unknown at this point, and of course Sam’s mum is there, too! I’ll take some pictures of them both at some point. Don't tell me they were using ME108 instead of ME109 (or the Buchon which is a Spanish version and looks very similar, used in the Battle of Britain film)! Or Harvards in place of anything, another thing they do.

The Spanish version of the Messerschmitt 109 had Rolls Royce engines. There was also a Spanish made version of the Heinkel He 111 called the CASA C2111 which had the same engines. Both were used in the Battle of Britain film. At the time the film was made, 1969/70, the Spanish air force had only just phased them out of service

If you want to catch up on more of Phil then "Victor" is a good series to watch. He only appears in the first three or four episodes but he plays a copper that is knocking off Vincent's (Ray Winstone) ex-wife. There is a thread started by Get Carter >>> HERE <<< covering the series. Annie and I watched it again recently, one or two episodes a night and enjoyed catching back up on it. As you'll see from the thread there are a number of faces you'll recognise... Sam.

My son was telling me that he's started watching 'Life On Mars.' and that he's liking it a lot. He was also telling me that Phillip and John Simm made another series together called 'Mad Dogs.' The series has probably been mentioned on the forum before and I've not noticed it. I was just wondering if anyone has seen it, and if it was any good?
Charles.

I’ve never seen Mad Dogs, other than the first 10 minutes. I probably should sometime because it’s very well thought of, it just didn’t really appeal.

I think there were a number of us on here that watched it Charles. Have a butcher's at the IMDB page >>> MAD DOGS <<<I certainly enjoyed it although it must be said (without spoilers) that the final scene of the final series was a bit surreal. It was shown around 2011 onwards and I think it is due now for a re-watch. Time to source the DVDs/ Blu-Rays..... Sam.

He does a very good intense character. He does. I still, after all this time, find it unsettling when he's anything other than The Guv, though. As much as he seems a lovely chap in interviews etc and I'm certainly never going to complain about watching him in anything, nothing compares!

Phil as a '90's Raver/Drug Dealer - his best appearance is at 45:44, I've posted this before but thought it good for this thread!
