Being a child of the '60s, born in '61, I was fortunate to have a wide and varied selection of toys. Now I'm sure I'm not the only forum member to be in their early 50's, or maybe I am...
Anyway, after seeing some Lego on a colleague's desk today, it got me thinking into some of my old toys that I still have and wondering if anyone on here had similar?
The first one that comes to mind is a large box of Hornby O gauge tin-plate track, engines, and rolling stock. The track had special joiners and included various sets of points, a large station, a passenger footbridge, water tower, and buffers. There was too much track for our lounge so it had to be laid through to the kitchen too. Many hours were spend putting the track together and repeatedly winding the trains up only to get two or three laps before they came to a stop again. Anyone else have this?
The next one that I remember is a Marx Motorway set. It came with two estate cars, one red, one blue, again they were clockwork, and the track was a figure of eight with a bridge. Each car ran in a sort of gulley but the track was very brittle and the joining lugs soon broke off.
Then there were Timpo figures. Plastic figures, I had loads of cowboys and Indians complete with stagecoach, Sheriff's hut, tepees, totem poles, camp fire, and canoes. The figures could be taken apart so that hats were changed, scarves, heads, belts etc, and horses bridles and saddles could be swapped.
Feeling nostalgic now I think I'm going to have to have a trawl through eBay and see if I can supplement some of these.
Did anyone else have these toys? Or maybe other toys that they would like to reminisce over?
Lord B.

A standout toy from my childhood is the Scalextric set I got and added to as the years went by. Hour upon hour of fun. I also had a 6ft snooker table that I was on constantly. Lego, yes - another toy I had that gradually got added to over the years. As for bikes, not exactly a toy I suppose but I had numerous ones including a Chipper, A Grifter and a Chopper. Spent many an hour using my Chopper as I grew up GH.

Gene, was your Chopper purple? The Saint I see where you might be going with this, but I had a purple Chopper. It had five gears instead of the normal three. I had Lego, Meccano, a number of Dinky and Corgi cars buses and lorries, and I remember I also had a football game called Striker where you pressed down the footballers head to make him kick the ball. I didn't have Scalextric, but instead I had an Airfix made slot car racing set. Two mini coopers, one red and one white, covered miles and miles of a figure if eight track until their tyres wore out and could no longer grip the track. Absolutely brilliant fun.

I remember having an Evel Knieval toy as a kid. The bike slotted into a red plastic stand that had a handle on it. You had to wind the handle as fast as you could to get the back wheel to spin and then the bike and rider shot off the stand at speed and invariably crashed into whatever ramp you'd set up for it to jump off.

Seems as if you had a privileged upbringing Lord Brett.
I remember the Hornby tinplate trains and the Timpo figurines, I also had some Timpo which was the old knights with the swords and shields. Some were on horses too. I also had a ballista catapult that fired arrows and could shoot the knights down.
Also like Gene Hunt I had a Scalextric set but that didn't come along until Christmas 1973 so really shouldn't be in this 60's thread, but it started as a basic figure of eight and grew rapidly. All my money was spent on buying all the different pieces of track such as the pitlane, all the chicanes, crossovers, and bridges.
Bikes? I think my bikes need a thread of their own...

I too had a purple chopper, but only three gears.Think this was the best memory for me,coming down Christmas morning and seeing it next to the Christmas tree.I was jumping around going mad, wish I had kept it.Also had a football game called striker, push the players head down to kick the ball and had floodlights.Miles better than subbuetto, just thought of the board game Colditz, that was great. Also had The Sweeney board game,I was never happy that the figures were bobbies in tall hats rather than Regan and Carter.

I remember the Evil Kneivel toy, never had one but on toy day at school there was always a few there that the other lads had bought in.Another major toy I remember was the corgi Starsky And Hutch Gran Torino,however-to make it cool in the early 80s the stripe was pulled off,and 01 was put on the doors to make it a Dodge Charger, like the Dukes Of Hazzard model.I actually had a Gran Torino, heaven knows what happened to it.I ruined it,though,as I have just written. What a prat the younger me was.

Lord B. How about this Lord Brett, recognise any of these?
I'll have to check with my parents to see if they still have our old Hornby up in their loft. I'm sure they will have.

A school mate of mine had the O gauge Hornby tinplate stuff, his Dad was a builder who owned quite a large house and the railway was set up in his massive bedroom floor, as a nipper I was well impressed with this. Had plenty of Lego in our house which got passed on to my younger brother. Fave toys from my childhood included several Gerry Anderson related goodies, namely Joe 90's flying car, Captain Scarlet's red patrol car, the white transporter vehicle and the SPV, The UFO Shado Mobile and Interceptor, and from Thunderbrids there was Lady Penelope's pink Roller, Thunderbird 2 with removable cargo pod and a very large scale model of Thunderbird 3 which my brother destroyed when he tested out its flying capabilities by chucking it out of an upstairs window!. Another fave was my Mattel Toys 'Whizzie-Wheel' race track complete with 'loop the loop' orange flexible track and jump ramps.
Ah the heady days of youth.... ;O)
