Any David Essex fans on here ? This film was one I saw many years ago and of course taped it off the telly Some of the filming is a bit ropey but still worth a watch. A few Sweeney faces in it too, Lee Montague as Nick's dad, Nick Brimble, T.P McKenna and Diane Keen is also in it. Unfortunately the DVD copy I have has the Alternative ending which is a bit naff. Why they did it I'll never know. I do dislike it when things have been cut. I managed to watch it just before Christmas and still enjoyed it.

Apparently the last film made by Rank, it flopped at the box office. I've never seen the movie myself, but I do remember the David Essex single.

AFAIK I think Silver Dream has appeared on ITV4 a few times so will try and look out for it next time it's on. I remember seeing the trailer on TV around the time of its release but as Vi says don't think it was critically and commercially successful back in 1980/81 when it was released. Interesting a fair few Sweeney faces were in it too.

I'm more familiar with 'That'll Be The Day' & 'Stardust', looking at the cast of Silver Dream Racer I'm not sure I've actually seen it. It's mentioned on the dvd commentary to The Sweeney episode 'Night Out' as David Wickes directed both & there's a poster of David Essex on the wall of Iris's room.

I noticed Iris's poster too lol.
I don't really remember the film when it was released but it couldn't have been very old when I first saw it. My parents had friends in the early 80's and the Husband used to race a sidecar with his brother and we as a family used to go with them at weekends and watch the racing. I suppose that's how I first came across Silver Dream Racer as it was all the rage at the time.Interesting that it didn't do very well at the box office.
I think the Beau Bridges character was somewhat annoying but that was the whole point I guess. I like Nick's friend and Mechanic, Cider. he's the sort of bloke you would like as a friend.
I like the part where David Essex is "lightening" some engine parts from the bike with a bench grinder lol. Some entertaining scenes for sure.
I read some reviews online somewhere and one said that the bike sounded more like an electric razor and there was more power in a fart! From what I've read I don't think the bike was that powerful in reality.
The Soundtrack album is good, mostly David Essex stuff on there. I managed to pick up a vinyl LP a few years back.

That'll be the day and stardust are excellent films. The first film I think represents the burgeoning nostalgia for the 1950s that was emerging at that time. Ringo is excellent in this film. Stardust is a prescient commentary of the rock star condition and Adam Faith shines in this (was he playing Ringo's character?). Both are enjoyable for different reasons.

Of the two I thought That'll be the day was the better one. I don't remember ever seeing Silver dream racer but I do remember the song Silver Dream Machine from about April 1980

From what I can remember some of the motocross at the start wasn't too bad but overall there were never going to be any Oscars. I've never seen it since but would probably give it a viewing if I find it back on the gogglebox. Sam.

It was on a week or two back on the Talking Pictures channel so I gave it a watch. It was passable I suppose, mainly of interest as a reminder of the era.
