Some of my early recollections are
The Big Freeze of the winter of 1962/3
Very vaguely remember mum saying something bad had happened in America when I was nearly 4, which would have been Kennedy
Churchills funeral being on the telly and me asking who he was
The Vietnam War on the news every night
The Russians occupying Czechoslovakia in 1968 and the student riots in Paris the same year
Oddly, I cant remember England winning the World Cup in 1966
Anyone else?

Elvis Presley dying in 1977. Can't say I remember it that well or even knew who Elvis was as I was 6 but the rest of the family tells me that we were on holiday in Wales at the time & on the day he died we decided to visit either Butlins or Pontins ( can't recall which ) for the day. According to my dad people in the camp were wearing t shirts commemorating his death, maybe that was a day or two after. What I do remember from that holiday is falling in a bramble bush or similar & injuring myself badly. The earliest/biggest event I actually attended was during Pope John Paul II's visit to Britain in 1982. The family travelled on a coach organised by local churches to see him in Heaton Park, Manchester on 31st May. It was an enormous event with an estimated 250,000 people ( see smudge below ). We arrived the evening before he arrived & slept in sleeping bags on the ground in the park, it was quite an experience. We'd made a banner that read 'Welcome JP2'. It was a very big deal at the time, at school we were asked to make scrapbooks of the Pope's visit, mine was judged the best.

Like you Arthur I remember the death of Elvis. I was 8 & I remember my mum telling me and my sisters he'd died. I lived my childhood years in a bubble and was definitely not in tune with news & current affairs.
I remember watching tv until the news/Nationwide came on and then going off to do something else.
I can remember Kenny Dalglish signing for Liverpool in 1977 and Archie Gemmill scoring against Holland in 1978.
I definitely remember John Lennon's murder in 1980 and the Iranian Embassy Siege.

Let's hope that everyone will be in a position to remember where they were when Donald Trump was sworn in. Where's that mushroom cloud emoji?

I seem to recall snow falling on the morning of the 1979 General Election, at least in Shropshire - a rare event in May even then. My earliest news memory is probably the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. In those days you would have a street party, with lots of jelly and ice cream for the kids and maybe a game or two of pass the parcel. I also remember Virginia Wade winning Wimbledon around the same time. Vi

Earliest memory is the 1976 heatwave and going on holiday to teignmouth. I can recall farmers fields being on fire by the motorway. I too recall the Jubilee and tables from one end of street to the other crammed with party food. The first news item I remember is the Truckers strike in early 1979 and the winter of discontent. I also remember an ATV news Hillman Hunter estate parked up by my local pub. Must have been important to tempt them away from Birmingham!

One of my earliest recollections was that Churchill had died. I didn't have a clue who he was as I was still only three years old at the time but it is only through unfortunate association as Churchill had died within days of my maternal grandmother.
I also remember the 1966 World Cup as a four year old and a neighbour giving me the centre page spread of the Daily Express with the photo of the England Squad.
After that I remember the Apollo missions and moon landings, in particular watching this as it was broadcast:
Sam.
