The new cars should be released soon. The launches seem to get later every year. A lot of them used to be in January I seem to recall. Yeah I thought that too... I'm sure in the say Schumacher/Häkkinen/Montoya etc. era the new cars all had broken cover just after Xmas. Think the only exception was in 2003 when Ferrari released their F2003GA to replace the almost perfect F2002 after the first three races and in some respects the predecessor was better in some areas than the car it replaced. Still nothing beat their F2004 a year later. Be interesting to see what these cars look like on the road too as they'll be wider and meaner than the 2009-16 generation of cars too.

I see Sauber have broken cover and launched the first of the 2017 cars. m.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/39027078TBH doesn't look radically different from the 2016 cars from that pic but I'm sure on track these cars will have a different profile to the 2009-16 generation. Hope Sauber can do alright this year considering Manor almost beat them to 10th and very nearly Sauber had a pointless season up to the last few races last year.

Another update from the third day of testing. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/formula1/39047917Between the lines seems the Mercedes are still very strong with Ferrari not too far behind (seemingly better than their nightmare 2016) and Williams also doing okay as well. Still we might not know who's the top dog team until Melbourne. Three weeks and counting!

The drivers are reporting good things so far. They are able to carry unbelievable speed around the fast sweeping corners compared to last years cars and are quite a few seconds faster than the 2016 cars already. In fact, they have lapped the Circuit De Catalunya in Barcelona quicker than anything since 2009.
Jolyon Palmer is quoted as saying he's "never had this amount of downforce on a car in his life" and also hailed the new tyre compounds as brilliant too, saying "you can push hard early and late in a stint on the same tyre. Degradation is almost nothing."
All bodes well for the season ahead with a hopeful end to the best drivers only driving at 50% capacity in order to save tyres.
Gene.

The new cars don't seem to have changed the field much so far. McLaren still seem way off the pace with Mercedes and Ferrari easily the quickest.
