Yes, I like The Stones 60s period best. The musical contribution of Brian Jones can be overlooked. I like the flutes on e.g. 'Ruby Tuesday'.
The use of the Andrew Oldham Orchestra sample by The Verve was characteristic of 90s music digging into previous decades in a subtle way. I will say that when used imaginatively, sampling was very effective and could provide the entire hook of a song.

Good post Bojan. Got to love a bit JJF😎 Love the beat Charlie lays down at the start. That video is a good quality picture 👆 That’s the reason I posted it, it’s a really good quality copy of a great video. When you’re the self professed worlds greatest rock n roll band, all you need is to paint your face and wear shades :D

This was a defining moment for The Stones, the 'Satanic Majesties' LP wasn't very well received in '67 and was looked on as just an inferior attempt at doing their own 'Sgt.Pepper', but within just a few short months into 1968 they found their mojo and got stuck into writing and recording for what was to become the 'Beggar's Banquet' LP, although 'JJF' was never supposed to be on it from the start. 'JJF' propelled them into their true 'satanic' phase, quite a lot went wrong along the way but the music that came out of them during this period still stands up today head and shoulders above a lot of the dross recorded by others at the time. Brian's drug and health problems, constant hassle from the Police and the press at every opportunity, the bad feeling between Mick and Keith when Mick was filming 'Performance' with Anita Pallenberg, the unexpected delay in getting 'Beggar's Banquet' into the shops because someone complained about the original 'toilet' cover and the realisation that they'd never be able to tour the USA because Brian wouldn't be given a new visa, then Brian being forced out of the band and dying just a month later all took their toll but they came through it all. Many bands would have imploded after that little lot but they got through it. For me the late period 60s work is this bands standard.

Villain In the late 60s and early 70s The Beatles, Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin could all lay claim to be the greatest band on the planet. You could make compelling arguments for any of them. One thing about The Stones that makes them stand out to me was sheer consistency. Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main Street and two non albums singles represents over four albums worth of high end rock n roll and i think the bands mentioned didn’t quite have such a good run. Or did they!?
