Is anyone excited about the Olympics starting ? Chance to chat about the Games online. Always surrounded by controversy, internal politics, human rights issues and many other issues but a continued global competition that has been going since 1896 (well the 'modern' Olympics format beginning then, ancient since way back when) is pretty impressive. Did anyone attend any competitions when it was held in London in 2012 ? The closest I have come to attending is going to the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in Melbourne in 2006 and watching an athletics day then at the MCG. The Australians tend to just focus on the swimming as that's about our only strength. I like watching the opening ceremony. It is a bit of a test of my geography as the teams march in and I think Gosh where's that country on the map ?

I'm glad you started this thread Batgirl because it gives me the opportunity to say I cannot stand the Olympics. Every 4 years we are supposed to get excited about someone running and skipping into a sandpit the furthest or jumping over fences or throwing a pointy stick.
They're all on drugs anyway, at least I have the good grace to acknowledge I am full of performance enhancing parts
Wake me up when its over

Steve, it may be a fault in my character but I'm pretty much in agreement with you mate. Apart from Football and one or two other sports, I'm not that much into Sport as a whole. The Olympics is a great and wonderful idea though,if they can keep Politics and unfair performance enhancing drugs out of it. Anyway, I hope it goes well, and I hope the rest of the lads (and ladies)on the forum enjoy the next few weeks viewing. Charles.

I didn't realise it had started until someone asked me if I was watching the opening ceremony. When I turned it on the spectacular part had ended & it was into the teams parade so I turned it off. A couple of hours later I switched it back on & they were still parading the teams! I may watch some of it but I'm not into competitive sport as a rule. I think it stems from being one of the last to be picked for a footy team at school. I usually spent Sports Day picking up litter though I did win the sack race once at primary school & my mum won a parent's egg & spoon race

The first one I remember watching was L.A 1984. It was a good Olympics and Great Britain had some decent track and field athletes. Daley Thompson's victory was an enjoyable watch. Some games are most definitely better than other ones. In recent memory the best ones were London, Athens and Australia. The Aussie Olympics was handy for me as I was doing night work at the time and could watch it live. With the Olympics I always tend to dip in and out of the coverage. Today I turned it on and Water Polo was on total tosh so that got the elbow straight away This evening I just watched the end of the cycling road race which was good. It had a dramatic finish with riders crashing.. I like a bit of Boxing, Sprinting and Gymnastics so I will be checking them out..

Horrible moment yesterday when a French gymnast snapped his leg in two after a bad land from a vaulting horse, glad I didn't see it live. The women's weightlifting was interesting to watch, seeing someone under 5ft lift twice her weight over her head is impressive.

.....seeing someone under 5ft lift twice her weight over her head is impressive. There's a joke there somewhere but I'll give it a miss I think
Personally, I think drinking beer should be an Olympic sport. Start in the early rounds with pints of tan, and progress to single malt in the finals. I'd give that a go and should think with a chance of bringing back the gold for England.

Beer drinking as an event would at least guarantee one medal for Australia every year
