There has been much talk recently about this popular series and the fact that it now has an all new line up. Has anyone seen it yet ? What do you all think ?
Most of the reports I've read are quite negative towards the latest series and though I haven't (by my own choice) watched a full episode, from what I have seen, it just isn't the same. Though I'm sure some will think that is a positive...

I've watched the first two and have found it very disappointing. The press reports about Chris Evans being 'shouty' are totally true. Why he feels the need to have such a presenting style I don't know.
But that's only part of it for me.
What I don't like is that they have kept all of the previous format and features, and then tried to fit new presenters into the old moulds. It is a bit like when in Citizen Smith and Peter Vaughn as Shirley's father was replaced by Tony Steedman - no disrespect to Tony Steedman but it was never going to be the same, he should have been a different character.
They should have taken the opportunity to start afresh with new features that suited the new presenters, after all Clarkson etc did exactly that when they took over the roles and turned it into a series that suited them. Evans et al need to do the same and start from a clean sheet.
The best bit so far (not that I've seen this week's) has been the feature on the McLaren including the F1 GTR. In that Jenson Button was excellent but it was just a shame that Evans was shouting and being a knob again.

The first two episodes were really poor but I thought the third was an improvement. It seems to be a bit more about cars than dicking about at least.

It's all about branding & the cult of personality rather than content, so instead of thinking 'how can we make a good show about cars?' the thinking is 'how can we keep the Top Gear brand alive?' I can't think of any tv show off hand where the presenters are bigger than the show itself, but that's what happened to Top Gear. It stopped being a car show and became the Clarkson/Hammond/May show. Now that it's no longer about them they face an uphill battle for viewers. Chris Evans's appeal is lost on me, it's like he's bluffed his way into tv & radio and why Matt Le Blanc?

I think you've hit the nail on the bonce there Tiger. I appreciate that Clarkson Hammond & May weren't to everyone's liking but I loved the show as it was. The only way it could have been improved was to bring in Vicky Butler Henderson.
This new format isn't for me. I am looking forward to C.H & M's new adventures later in the year though.

I haven't seen any of them as yet. It doesn't surprise me that producers are clinging to the known format. Hopefully it will evolve in time.
So what would forum members say is the best car show on tv that is more about the cars than the hosts ?

I reckon they would have had more success rebranding the show and trying to improve it rather than rehash it. There is no point watching a inferior copy of the Clarkson format Top Gear.

I think I'm spotting a trend here, I wonder why the producers decided to go that route?
I've now watched the third show and there really are no redeeming features now so won't bother with the next show. The only thing that I do consider better is the Star in the Rally Car. To add the rally stages in was a good idea.

As Bolly has pointed out elsewhere on the forum, Chris Evans has resigned from Top Gear.
Good call.
