Decent film and should have been the springboard for LC to take the Bond role but he decided or was advised (badly) to meet Cubby Broccoli wearing a tracksuit to portray his action man qualities. Who knows what might have happened if he'd gone suited and booted instead.

Frankly I've always thought they rather ruined this film with such a bloody stupid plot. A peace group would not be trying to achieve its aims by the use of a nuclear weapon on mainland Britain. They could have used the same action scenes in a film that made a lot more sense.

Haven't seen the film since eighties but I really enjoyed it at the time.
Pity Lewis didn't spruce himself up and wear a good suit to that meeting with Cubby. There have been many people in show business who believe it is vitally important to look smart and successful, even when you're not. I remember reading about some comedian in the old days who literally starved himself so he wear a decent suit to audition for work.
I think Lewis would have made a good Bond myself.
Charles.

Lewis Collins could have had a career similar to James Nesbitt. He could have done a few comedy series and some serious dramas as well like he did with Jack The Ripper. He did tread the boards though even acting alongside Pat Mower.

I did hear they were touting for Leslie Grantham to play Rebus when the TV adaptations first got ground, Lew would've been so much better if that had have been an option for him - right age/right feel IMO.
Who Dares Wins is a good and enjoyable film and outing for Lew and as I said in a post here a few years back should've been a springboard to something better. Still I always feel something's a bit lacking/a bit amiss with it kind of feel the plot drags out for a fairly long time then all the action at the end seems a bit rushed/a bit forced. Then you get the inevitable Pro's comparisons and yes it was a Bodie outing in all but name. But as relaxed actioner it's a fairly enjoyable watch.

I was thinking a bit more about Who Dares Wins the other day and I was thinking that it was very similar (in a way!!) to the Harry Palmer films of the 1960's in the fact that Peter Skellen was an antidote to the excesses of the James Bond character/films of the time. Awkward for me to say as I think that Lewis should have been Bond!!! It would've been interesting to see a few Skellen films run parallel to the world of Bond during the 1980's... Edited by Del: Reinstated a trailer in above post

This is another well known film I don't think I've seen. Looks good Edit : Just bought a second hand copy for 3 quid delivered. It's around as a new copy for a tenner both available on Amazon.

Edited by Del: Reinstated a trailer in above post I think a few of us have agreed that Lewis could have been a good Bond Palmer, so you're on song there. It was reported at the time that they used real SAS men for the helipcopter stunt, don't how true that is. I wish they had made it a bit less gung-ho. I've always thought Lewis was let down by his agent(s), surely they could have got him some decent TV work after The Professionals, I don't buy the type cast stuff. "He could have been a contender!"
