I remember a few of the names mentioned here, and do remember Fine Fare as we had a local one in my street in Luton which my mum shopped at. One day in 1979, her empty shopping trolley-bag got half inched from near the entrance - for ages loads of regular shoppers used to leave their trolley-bags in a row near the entrance as it was a couple of feet away from cashiers, so we thought they were safe. The trend stopped as they were being nicked...... Fortunatley it was empty but she had to get a new one. She didn't believe me initially when I said it was missing after I was asked to go and get it.
I do remember a Presto store in Paignton Devon about 1986 which was a name I hadn't heard of, as we didn't have them in Luton. We also had a Co-Op which became a Kwik Save years later, then more recently went back to Co-Op again.
I believe some of the Fine Fares became "Elmo Discount" for a while in the late 70's but that name didn't last long.
Clothes shops in the 80's included Justins and Mister Byrite, and I got a couple of trendy 80's Jumpers with my pocket money around 1987 in Justins. The Justins actually became an Olympus later when me and my brother started getting trainers from them. Previously we had to make do with Tesco trainers etc, (Adidas lookalikes) until out of the blue my mum came home with new trainers for me, which were Inters....... I got some respect there from the school lads who previously showed about their trainers being better than mine!

Wish I could find a pair now

Athena was a great store and I remember visiting the one in my local shopping centre quite a bit when I was a little younger!!!
As I was younger then I don't recall why it closed, only that it was there one week then gone the next!
Shopping seemed so much better in the 70's and 80's...

Telefusion. Rented tvs etc, Was a client of the insurance firm I started working at in '78. About 81 ish, when videos first came out they took out a policy covering damage to rented vcrs, no one knew what they were properly at the time, the insurers just pulled a figure out of thin air and charged them a tenner per machine per year, based on the total they had at the time which was something like 20 - £200 premium. The policy was adjustable, at the end of the 12 months they had to tell us if the number had changed and if it had gone down, they would get a rebate, if it went up, they had to pay a bit more. 1981 was the year that video took off, the declaration at the end of the year was something like 5000 machines! they got a bill for about forty five grand! Think the insurers waived it.

Was it a bit like Clinton's cards. Steve I remember Mr Byrite in the late 80's early 90's. I used to buy clothes from Fosters in the 80's Don't think they were a big chain though.

Thankfully my preferred tailors Gieves and Hawkes in Saville Row have been unaffected by such modern trends.
Though I must say that their World Wide Interweb page thingummy could be better. Their latest male model has that goddamn awful Posh Spice pout!
You'd never have caught a proper man pulling such a face when modelling knitwear!
