Bronson - yes, I also bought the Brighton episodes (1969) on DVD. They indicate that the entire series must be very good.
A slow pace, but it draws you in compellingly.
And is helped by a lot of familiar guest actors.
I suspect the post 1975 season may have been pencilled in for 1977, between Sweeney seasons. In the event Euston made a third season of 'Van Der Valk' at this time.

I suspect the post 1975 season may have been pencilled in for 1977, between Sweeney seasons. In the event Euston made a third season of 'Van Der Valk' at this time. TV historian Andrew Pixley mentions in the book which accompanies the DVD box set of the series that LLoyd Shirley, executive director of Euston Films in the late 1970s, wanted to revive Public Eye and move it on to 16mm film around 1978. Writer Roger Marshall seemed to like the idea but Alfred Burke was less keen on it, thinking it might become more like a Sweeney type of show and betray all that had made the series successful in the past.

That is probable, given that 'The Professionals' was also on the scene by then. There were other shows as well like 'Target'. They had more physical action than he sedate Public Eye.
We saw what happened when 'The Saint' was updated with Ian Ogilvy. All the ITC polite adventure of old, but with some attempts at Sweeney-style physicality. It could be a jarring mix and 'Public Eye' might have been treated similarly.
Whilst 'Minder' is seen as the 'successor' to The Sweeney, I think it also took a huge dose of Public Eye as an influence as well. The slower pace, local businessman/pubs/villains etc. Alfred Burke even appeared in the first season.

Whilst down in Teddington (Middlesex) recently, I decided to look at a few locations from Series 6 (1972-73) - the sad cat that I am! A FAMILY AFFAIR was episode 1 in production, filmed in July 1972, broadcast in January 1973. Synopsis: Mr Charles Knight has died, leaving his estate to be divided equally between his two sons and his housekeeper, Harriet Thorne. The brothers not only resent this, but believe Miss Thorne may have put pressure on their father to achieve her own ends. The brothers' solicitor hires Frank Marker to investigate... Frank arrives at Charles Knight's home on Fairfax Rd, Teddington. Then... Now... Franks walks along Adelaide Road, Teddington (Willoughby Lane in the story) to the newsagents for information. Then... Now... Frank enters the newsagents on Victoria Road, Teddington. Then... Now... Vi

Thanks for putting this up Vienna. I'm a big fan of Public Eye. I've not seen this episode yet, as I'm still working my way slowly through series five. Bye the way I wish I'd been aware at the time that Frank's office was in Eton when we were there. I would have gone down and had a look myself.

No worries Bronson Actually, A Family Affair is probably the weakest episode in Series 6 but watchable if you're a fan of the show. Vi

Id heard of Public Eye over the years but I was too young to remember it on its original airing,I bought the Box of Frank DVD set with all the episodes and the superb Andrew Pixley book in one of Network DVDs sales, and Im so glad I did!. Ive only managed to watch upto the start of the Windsor episodes so far, but its a fantastic series and Alfred Burke plays such an endearing character.

Interesting article there Arthur. When does it date from? Possibly 1975 before the last series was shown. Funny how the guy being interviewed about his line of work says that someone who is an established private investigator such as Frank Marker should have got a car by this time. He still hasn't even got a bicycle Vi
