This is another little gem from the '60s and early '70s. The late Alfred Burke plays inquiry agent Frank Marker, who works on cases of missing persons, divorces, bankruptcies etc. He often struggles to make a living and often relies on public transport to follow people around; he's also a bit of a loner. He even ends up in court and gets a prison sentence.
Sadly, yet another classic TV series from the 1960s that suffered from being junked. Network have released all the surviving ABC and Thames episodes on a complete box set. Anybody like this on here?

I do remember it Vienna - vaguely. Alfred Burke was in quite a bit of stuff over the years. The Avengers, Armchair Theatre productions, Minder, Randall & Hopkirk Deceased etc. I'll have to have a look to see if I can find any Public Eye clips to refresh the memory Gene.

Yes I absolutly love this series. Alfred Burke gave a great performance as Marker. I've got one series on DVDs the one where Frank comes out of nick and moves to Brighton to make a fresh start. I watched this again a few months ago. Even though some of the series were junked, some of them are still available. I will have to order some of them pretty soon. When you see some of these old programs, the standard of acting is quite often a lot better than today's in my opinion anyway.

Only five episodes are known to exist from the first three ABC series. Series 3, which sees Frank working in Birmingham, only has one surviving episode ' The Bromsgrove Venus'
Very frustrating indeed >:D

This series is new to me so it will be good to find out about it. I don't seem to know a lot of the 60's and 70's ITV stuff. I think this is due to ITV not repeating them as much as the Beeb ?

It certainly wasn't screened much after it finished in 1975. It had been largely forgotten by the general public for over 20 years until the Midlands based Kaleidoscope organisation, which looks for lost TV footage, found a couple of episodes in the '90s. Of course, the arrival of DVD was a big factor in reviving a lot of these old shows.

Very true Vienna RE Dvd's. On the repeats front the BBC are still showing stuff from 70s and 80s weekday afternoons on BBC1 . As far as i know ITV seemed to have stopped that a long time ago. You didn't see as many of their classic shows until the more recent arrival of ITV3 and ITV4.

I seem to remember reading that the film division of Thames TV, Euston Films, was going to make another series of Public Eye, sometime after '75 but Alfred Burke wasn't too keen on it being filmed instead of video taped. So it wasn't made.

Yes, very popular in 1973 I believe, Gene. I used to watch it on Mr Rigsby's b&w tv set at the time
