Sorry to drag an old post/topic up but here goes...!!
I saw a very memorable (even though I'd never 'seen' it before) face appear towards the end of this film when I was watching it the other day!
There is a council office security guard that might look familiar if you ever watch this most superb film again (and a certain episode from Series 4 of The Sweeney)!!!
I might be wrong (I could very well be wrong!) but this old chap looks just a little different without his hearing-aid...!!

I watched 'The Long Good Friday' for the first time tonight. A tv channel, SBS are having a 'gangster' themed week. After watching the film I logged on here as I knew it had to be discussed in a thread.
What a welcome surprise this film was ! I felt like I was watching 'The Sweeney as there were so many similar strengths.
Bob Hoskins' character could definitely have been a geezer that Regan would have been pursuing. I didn't recognise Helen Mirren at first as I have only seen her later work. Amazing cast.
The inclusion of music in scenes seemed like a Sweeney score at times. Shows of that era tended to have a louder and more distinct emotion ridden choice of music. Love it !
Even the language was just superb. When Harold has seen Colin's body and making arrangements for its discreet removal he is told -
"They'll collect the body in an ice cream van". Harold: "There's a lot of dignity in that. Going out like a raspberry ripple!"
They just don't write dialogue like that anymore ! It shocks at the same time as making you laugh.
The meatworks freezer scene filmed from the viewpoint of the suspects involved was scary and an example of the unexpected scenes. The time taken to film Harold's face in the car and the waiting and waiting while we watch his face probably would have been cut to save time in today's editing style.
Filming at a car smash up race, characters named 'Razors' and a story line that quickly grabs your interest as to who will be next made it a really good watch. I did look out for Harry Aitch Fielder's face in any extra type cast members and I read now in Sam's first post that Aitch was in it, but I missed spotting him !

When Harold Shand is driven by Razors to the warehouses between the King George V dock and Royal Albert Dock they pull up alongside a Rolls Royce on a trailer behind a Police Range Rover. Aitch is the first of the two coppers seen alongside Parky at the trailer. Very much one of those "blink and you'll miss it" appearances. Sam.
