Thanks for that Steve, very nice tribute. I always thought that Jimmy Perry's favourite episode was the 'don't tell him Pike' one 'The Deadly Attachment' but I'm not surprised about 'Branded', it's possibly the only episode I can think of that could be considered 'controversial' & it shows what kind of a man Ridley was that he respected those who refused to fight. Clive Dunn became staunchly anti war as a result of his experience in a camp with German POW's. I don't think it's a coincidence that Mainwaring was written as a man who never saw active service yet was the most gung ho of the platoon. Arnold Ridley's 'This Is Your Life' is on youtube, he seemed a modest man & according to Ian Lavender never once mentioned his time as a soldier. His son has written a book about him which I'm sure would be an interesting read.

I read a few reviews all saying it's bad then I read The Independent's review which gives it 5 stars & says it 'surpasses the original'

I quite like Dads Army so I'll probably go & see it. No use prejudging something you haven't seen.

I feel the same way as I felt about the Nick Love Sweeney film, even if it had been a good film in its own right ( which The Sweeney really wasn't ), it wouldn't have changed my view that rehashing something that is all about the writing, cast, period it was made, etc. is a pointless undertaking and, without wanting to sound precious, disrespectful to the original's memory.
