Who else is looking forward to the new dads army film . It's great to see the union jack emblazoned on buses in scotland advertising dads army. Looks like it could be a good sing song at the pictures .

I wouldn't say I'm looking forward to it. I will watch it if the opportunity arises, but it can never be the same as the original can it ?
Still.... I'll give it a chance.
Gene.

Like The Sweeney remake I just look at it & think 'why?'. Dad's Army is one of my favourite shows but I don't even watch the 1971 film when it's on tv so there's not much chance of me seeing this. It's a film that would be impossible for me to enjoy at face value as I'd be thinking 'that's wrong' or 'Mainwaring wouldn't do that' all the way through. I did that with the Dad's Army drama that was on over Christmas where they got stuff wrong like making the actor who played 'Walker', James Beck, into a real life spiv when in fact he was a fairly well spoken man who painted or when they had Bill Pertwee introducing the first show when his character 'Hodges' & phrase 'put that light out!' didn't really feature until series 3. Things like that don't mean much to the casual viewer but as a fan it annoys me.

I'm a bit like Arthur 'Tiger' Pringle on this one. Can't say I've got any interest in seeing it at all. I saw the trailer for it at the flicks a couple of months ago and that was enough for me!
The latest incarnations of The Sweeney, Dad's Army, and Still Open All Hours should not have happened. The originals were of the time, suited that time, and the line drawn underneath. These are just poor imitations.
I think Sergeant Wilson's line to Mainwaring should have be quoted when it was proposed:
"Do you really think that's wise, sir?"
Sam.

Wasn't really a fan of the original series and should have been left alone in my opinion. But remakes (whether good or bad) do tend to have some kind of success, even if it's just attracting those nostalgic for the original.

I have never seen an episode of Dad's Army, it just never appealed to me. I do think that a re-make is a bad idea, some things are just of their time and should be left alone.

I wasn't a huge fan of it but thought it was OK and I did like Mainwaring and Wilson. By all accounts Le Mesurier and Lowe weren't really acting, the characters were pretty much how they were IRL.
Remake - not a good idea

It's not a show I watched growing up, it's hard to tell when & why I got interested in it. I think the most important character in it is Godfrey. One of the best episodes is the one where he is 'outed' as a Conscientious Objector & is sent to Coventry by the others. I think Perry & Croft were aware that the actor who played him Arnold Ridley, despite appearances, knew the horrors of war first hand & there's something very moving about that. There's a lot more to the show than 'don't panic' & 'stupid boy'. Hi De Hi has some of the same pathos. That's one of the problems with the new film, it won't be able to capture that underlying seriousness & the fact that war was something that that generation of actors & writers actually lived through.
